I think if your brain doesn't work like that, you're not a roleplayer.

Not so much anything surreal, but does anyone else change their conventions for certain things like word emphasis and typo corrections between characters so it's not as obvious which other characters you play?

Heh.
With one of my characters, I've completely changed how I type emotes.

I try not to play some characters in the same time I play others.
And specially in the same time I write on the forum.

I am waaaaaay too easily distracted to bother attempting something like that. Lol. My time is so limited that I just wake up all of my characters all of the time when I'm able to spend even a tiny bit of amount of time on the game.
There's no way I could keep styles separate for each character.

I'm an incredibly easy one to pick out, I think.

Apparently you're not; I still haven't figured out any of your characters (I don't think). ;)

I have a few sleepers, characters I only wake up when certain activity happens, one character with a completely different emoting style, and I even OOC differently depending on the character. But for everything else (besides personality of the character, obviously) I think I'm pretty easy to figure out once you know one of my characters.
Oh yeah, and I also emote differently here on the forums than I do IG.

I'm not sure about the emoting, I've almost only ever seen people emote one way I think.

I know one of Snick's at least, probably THE most obvious one though. I'm curious if anyone knows any of mine.

lol.
To be honest, you probably know all of them (I don't have many, really)
But, i think for me the biggest problem to identifying characters played by the same player stems from me not really paying attention to such things. I honestly have no interest in knowing if someone is played by the same person and such. Though, I do find myself running into a certain player's characters a lot so I am aware of people's tells, just don't actively look for me. Small world, eh?

I've seen people emote like this: *emote*, and some like **emote**. And the vast majority of the Spanish characters emote like -emote-, which is how I emote on the forums and OOCly. And I know ::emote:: and (emote) are used also, although not nearly as commonly as *emote* and even **emote**. I also remember once experimenting with the quotation marks and emoting, something like:
You say: "My name is Snick." She nods. "How are you today, sir?"
But I decided it would probably get too confusing at some point, if one failed to keep track of the location of quotes, and especially with the type of things like:
You say: "" She scratches her head curiously, staring at the man as if she thinks he's crazy. ""
(With the dark green being what I would type in the box, of course. The outer two quotation marks are automatically included.)

So, I guess what I really meant by "style of emoting" was the punctuation identifying the emote.

You mean Snick?

I've primarily only seen the * and the **. I only really remember the :: from old AOL RP chat rooms and I hated it ever since I went to places that used the * instead.

I personally have been using * since my later Neopets days (starting on 6 October 2007 -- yes, I remember these things, and I didn't even have to look it up!), and graduated to - later on, which I disused early in my Cantr-days, but I've since brought it back to my OOC comments you all are forcing yourselves to read  and my Spanish character, because I'm too lazy to figure out where the * is when I have the Spanish keyboard setting on.

I like to think that I change my playing style based on each char, each one speaks a little different...but...I think that if you judge by facial expressions then you could pick my chars out easily. I don't really change the way I *emote*.

I once had a char with purposely bad spelling (also in emotes), but unfortunately he probably never encountered someone who might have recognized me. I also felt surprisingly guilty about it.

I type emotes always on the same way... But I try to change my RP on every char, even changing expresions and the way they adress people...
I try to give them not only a personality, but a different language.
At least, I try it

The same place as } on the English keyboard, ] + shift. Another good one is the " which is at the same place as @.
