I remember someone saying that there are rivers on the map, we just can't see them. It would help if we could utilise these for faster travel in places that don't have sea access.

Why can't we see them? Are they really there?

If no...

If yes... :D !! This would help things a great deal. One of my major problems is that it's tough to move a lot of materials overland. Rivers would be a great solution with all of the boats floating around. It would serve as a quicker route in between locations both for travel, military, shipping... rivers.

I think I'm gonna put that in my sig.

Rivers.

There are rivers stored somewhere in the game database. The coding is not in place for them to have a purpose. You can go dig out the links if you like.

Yeah, it's indeed stored in the database, although I haven't looked at it for a long time so I don't know how up-to-date it is :) ... i.e. whether all islands have rivers.

Those rivers don't generally touch locations, though, I think. Not actually sure about that ...

Unfortunately, Sho, the most recent threads died almost a year ago. :(

Even if they don't, Jos, I'm sure they'd help going from point to point on the sea? Like if they cut across a peninsula?

And if they don't border locations, could they be made to? Settlements on rivers are all over the place.

Can rivers go from sea to sea? :-) ... Well, from a higher sea to a lower one, yes, but in Cantr there's really only one sea :) ...

Yeah, I guess. They were really intended for free roaming stuff ;) - so I expected settlement to approach rivers rather than the other way around :) ...

I guess that makes sense... lol. It's been a while since I've been on the forums, forgot all about free roaming.

Is it just me or does this thread seem a little defeatist? Surely the answer isn't to make the world smaller or travelling times shorter but to fill the land with more people. :D

If any of your characters is exploring you might have some idea about the amount of unsettled areas. The amount of characters needed to make them into societies with trade and development is so huge, that shrinking the world is a reasonable suggestion to allow characters to actually meet other civilisations or cultures.

T-shirt, I think there are two totally different issues here:

1) the number of locations
2) the distances between those locations

The Polish area probably covers at least as many locations as the English, cities have similar sizes, and they have reasonable sparsely inhabited areas on their borders. This has not done much bad for the game - in fact, they have a very lively area.

The old English islands have far fewer locations than most other islands (except the really small ones), but with large distances between them, and the game seems to be far less exciting.

So we're not talking about removing locations - indeed, there are thousands, and still large numbers of them unexplored. But we're talking about reducing distances, one way or another, or, alternatively, chasing people away from the islands with the large distances :).

I am with HF and really like this latter idea, but expect big player revolts :).

We could of course reduce all the road distances on the two old islands, since they are stored separately from the actual locations, but that will hugely increase the deviation in actual distance / travel distance, and land distance / sea distance. So sailing maps wouldn't change, nor would the map, but the ratio walking/sailing will be very different from other islands. It was mentioned above that this is already somewhat the case that on those islands there is a mismatch, but of course not this dramatically.

What this all needs is someone to make a decision.

I could give you my opinion but I can't expect anyone to believe that it isn't influenced by the fate of my characters or my desire for this or that in game. In the past I tried to be involved in a vehicle build... result three characters involved went for resources and never came back, two died of heart attacks..
lack of patience and, lack of dedication
perhaps but this is a game not a career.

I assume it's you Jos but if its some bizarre commitee then so be it, whoever is in charge needs to make a decision as to what will make the game work better. Hey, have you considered making the game primarily polish... let th 'old' islands just die out...

Whatever is best for the game should be done no matter who is upset if their car business is ruined, or their monopoly on wood destroyed. [/quote]

Would it be too difficult to code mountable horses/elephants/etc.?

That would be a cheap way to increase travel time. Nearly everyone could do it.

Dude rephrase that immediately!

But seriously not every location has horses.. I can accept elephants, cows, maybe deer but I can't see people riding desert tortoises up in the mountains...

Am I understanding you right? You would prefer to depopulate the old islands? Uproot charries from their homes, and move them to someone else's town and island? Let the old islands die out? Lose all that awesome history?
