When people start naming their towns after states.

To be fair, there are tons of places on Fu with RL place names. It's not a new phenomenon.

It's ooc and it's irritating. Be a little more creative people. Personally I find it a bit bordering on CRB. Not sure how staff feels about it but it annoys me.

And on the flip side, there are entirely too many town names in the game that show entirely too much "creativity"...
(And also lack of creativity in naming so many towns "Name Biome Direction", for that matter.)

It's hilarious and to your char it's just another nonsense collection of syllables like all the other original town names in the game so she should get over it.
There are so, so many OOC references all over this game, not even counting the ones in Fu, and the many, many character names that have RL sources (countries, cities, rivers, mythological sources... ) that realistically have no place in Cantr, I don't see how a town sharing a name with a state would even register.

I agree. I also think it's funny. There's a huge volume of OOC content in the game, so why single this one out in particular? I mean, it's not nearly as bad as, say, that religion that was blatantly plagiarized from somewhere. Honestly, people bring in so much baggage from the real world--not just names but also assumptions, ideas, and behaviors--that I feel like it's not worth getting bent out of shape over relatively benign things. I think it ends up being more disruptive if people make a big deal out of it IC than if they just ignore it and treat it like any other name.
Excuse me, but why do people describe their breasts in graphic detail and put their outy bits into other people's inny bits so much? Oh, you're having sex? What's a sex? *stares blankly* What purpose does that serve? Are you trying to reproduce or something? That seems weird and strange to me. (ooc: YOU'RE BREAKING MY IMMERSION)

I also think the state name is disruptive and so obviously headed to be related with RL stuff that makes me, as a player, being annoyed about the place. Once they are old names and they appear in all the maps it's hard to change it. But I don't see the point in doing it now. Makes me tend to ignore it, in the best of cases, and I'd like not to have to.

Yes, but god forbid your character tries to rename it ("The maps! Think of the maps!")

For better or worse, those maps make life easier. I don't blame someone for wanting to make a town "their own" by renaming it. What I don't understand are the ones who get impatient or frustrated with people constantly asking "where is that?" and they have to repeatedly say "well, it's called X on the map." Sooo....uhhh... Wouldn't it be easier to just use what's on the map?

Because town names change. They should change. Change is good. And I think a lot of people forget this. People who get bent out of shape for something having a new name seem to be a loud minority, but I find it affecting the game more negatively than the actual changing of the name is. Maybe players can start photoshopping the old maps to have new names and distribute them. Stagnation is bad for the game. I don't think any of us are "Bauer" level map makers, but most every old map could use an update

I don't get the Bauer atlas, when trying to steal the code it doesn't fit. It goes over the maximum note size. I wanted to fix its encoding errors and the outdated information.

I'm not saying change is bad.

It would be nice if there were a better way than the map system available in-game. I'm always amazed by the amount of effort and time the mapmakers have put into things. Unfortunately, by time they make the map and get it distributed well enough, it's outdated. Cantrians need computers with an online map that's more dynamic.

"We're in [new town name], formerly [old town name], location [something] on the map" is how the pros do it.

As far as I can remember, Bauer got a special allowance because staff liked the idea but it was over the limit. The original idea was to have Cantr and Treefeather on the same note, but he was told to split it up.

Re: Things that annoy or puzzle you about Cantr
So just because there are previous bad choices of introducing OOC names in Cantr that means it's okay to continue doing so?
