Why should that be expected of all the other characters? Why shouldn't that just be dealt with in character like they spoke so loudly by accident everyone could hear (like a group wide overheard whisper)? Even if the 'whisper' is acknowledged in game by other characters most of the time unless you're trying to take over the town or something people don't care, or don't understand the context of whatever your character said so they don't care anyways. If they -are- trying to take over the town, I'm pretty sure no one will care about an OOC message either - they're going to react to that 'whisper'.

So why bother? Seems like a very unnecessary use of OOC messaging to me.

Wow, sorry. Didn't expect backlash on that.
Let me explain it to you then. We're here to, what rollplay? something like that? And part of that would be, I assume, having characters whose characterizations are dictated more than by what button is where on a particular screen. So, if I want to have a character that's able to carry on a quiet conversation without accidentally shouting, because, you know, that's how normal people who don't have speech impediments work, then when I accidently shout, because navigating away and back changed the settings I had taken for granted, I don't see why the most reasonable thing to do is to assume that my character suddenly has the speech patterns of an excited 4 year old. Same reason people correct their typos. Sometimes they might cough or something, but come on, we all know what they're doing. If it bothers you that much, report it. That's what you're supposed to do with annoying OOC messages, right?

I don't really understand why you're being defensive? This was a post about the general act and my questioning whether it is necessary, not your situation in particular? I don't know who you play or what situation you're talking about.

Characters aren't 'shouting' when they aren't whispering.

Just as an ooc message 'assumes' their characters aren't the ones speaking, and 'assumes' that whatever act occurred suddenly hasn't anymore we can easily say the same for our characters 'assuming' your character doesn't have weird speech patterns all of a sudden because they accidentally spoke a little too loud. I don't think I've ever seen another character say someone has weird speech patterns just because they didn't ooc message about a post that was supposed to be a whisper, so we can throw that assumption out the window.

Again, I don't know what situation you're talking about in particular. This was a general vent and question about why people feel it's necessary. So I guess thanks for enlightening me? I'm not that butthurt over it to report something so trivial even if I knew what situation you meant or who you played, I just came here to air some puzzlement.
I think you're over reacting.

I've encountered this a couple times. Just treat it like an overheard whisper, simplest solution. And maybe just...relax? Swingerzetta, you know even if it was in reference to something your character did no one would have ever known if you hadn't outed yourself just now. :P

And you don't need to have the speech patterns of an excited 4 year old for someone to overhear a whisper, in Cantr or in real life.

Anyway, however the other characters wind up reacting, it's much easier to play off IC than handing the wrong person a note or a key, both of which I've witnessed. You guys should be grateful. :)

I was defensive because I'm embarrassed to have made the mistake. It's a stressful game sometimes, for me. Lots of viewers, and I clicked wrong and everyone knows it. Maybe not by this user name, but my characters are probably judged more harshly in the minds of the players than I am here. That's what that is, embarrassment. I'm sorry for reaction to it with anger, but I hope my explanation can still be seen through it.

That's how I generally feel about it.

We all make that mistake! I've made it many many times, even after almost five years of playing. It happens, don't worry. No one's judging you. I'm certainly not. I was just asking about the reasoning. I wasn't attacking you or anyone else who does it.

I don't know why you think your characters are judged more harshly, sounds like something you're also worried about but is probably not true. This game can be stressful but it shouldn't be for those reasons.

No worries. I'm sorry if my post came off badly. It really was an honest question looking for an honest explanation/discussion.

There's nothing wrong with making that mistake, but it's usually more distracting than helpful to correct the mistake with OOC. Usually the mistake is so obvious that everyone will ignore it (because we've all been there), and if it was indeed a misdirected "let's murder Marian" then people aren't going to pretend you didn't just say that. It happens, and I think most people involved just want to get past it rather than get hung up on what was said. I tend to spend over five minutes re-editing a single message, and by then obviously the whisper button is no longer selected. As it happens many of my characters are vile gossips, makes for some interesting explanations.

It might be important to know this discussion came up a while ago as well, and the official PD stance is that the original "mistake" counts, no matter what is said OOC.

A solid answer I wouldn't have known otherwise. Thanks Wiro.
And absolutely. Nothing wrong with making that mistake, and I've also found most people just want to get past it. It doesn't bother anyone because we all know it's not intentional.

I make a lot of really dumb mistakes either because I'm exhausted (I.e. that time I said something out loud instead of into the radio- whooops) or misclicking crap on my phone.

The ooc "neverminds" disturb me because I personally find it hilarious trying to explain away the stupid ic, and it happens to me enough I'm no longer embarrased.

The radio thing, btw, iirc I explained away in charatcer like "If it would stop snowing on the radio and making it malfunction, maybe I wouldn't have to yell shit into it to be heard. Sorry if that inconveniences you person outside"

Edit: Oh yeah and the other day I was trying to sneakily hold on to some keys and hope no one asked about them, but in picking them up accidentally pointed. I hardly think an ooc:nevermind the point would have made the player forget I had at least one key XD ...Now I have no keys :(

I would totally be for an optional confirmation before pointing. I can't remember the last time I actually intended to point at something in my inventory rather than drop it on the ground. I would definitely have my character be rude to anyone asking why I pointed at my macaroni. Leave me alone. :(

Once in real life I was talking about how stupid a certain person had looked running, while the person was in the same room. I certainly didn't mean for them to overhear but they did. She dropped a note in front of me saying how offended she was and how she had defended me when people were laughing at me. I was also too embarrassed to talk and dropped a note of apology in front of her. So this is similar to people accidentally speaking out loud instead of whispering.

I have had a few moments when a whisper was overheard that was 'embarrassing'.
Get your minds out of the gutter, it wasn't like that.

In cases like that, a note is often something that cannot be overheard.
=============================

I don't think that there is an 'official' PD stance. We take things on a case by case basis.

Some things just cannot be unheard when they affect events in game and often the overheard whisper is reacted to before someone brings it to our attention.
Events can no more be undone, than whispers unheard.
Characters and their players can choose how they react to those things, or to people who add thoughts to emotes.

OOC: Sorry I accidentally used a battleaxe instead of a waster when I was sparring you Marian.
ooc: Lets just pretend it never happened?

The damage is pretty much done and the honey is consumed.

ooc: Sorry that we are picking on your Marian.

But serious, that has happened more than once :P How you gonna explain in IC that you hit with battleaxe instead than with waster? Maybe if we had firearms you could say, ups sorry I had too quick finger but with battleaxe... not so much

Actually I accidentally did this once but it was a crossbow. I just roleplayed a misfire with the trigger getting hit by accident while reaching for my waster.

I guess you could roleplay tripping with a battle axe in hand
