I don't feel we need to place too much emphasis on the "playing a child" part. In my view you would have a baby object that would in due course "spawn" or become a cantrian ot whatever. Why create a huge amount of extra programming? As far as I'm concerned the only chance we have of ever actually seeing babies in the game is if players play their own, and they go pretty fast from baby object to young cantrian.
And babies, along with certain other motivating elements, are becoming essential for the game. The old established islands are a bit flat these days, are they not?

Thank you, you've managed to explain in 2 sentences what I've been trying to explain across an entire thread in suggestions.

The problem with playing a child is that they will automatically be crap at everything. At least when a charrie spawns at the age of 20, you can kinda think of good reasons as to why they have skills.
With a child, they're 'new' and you'll have to painstakingly build up their skills one by one, and that will suck big time.

talent and natural aptitude?
I don't see why babies have to be without skills

Well, I would assume that a kid would start out awkward or novice at everything, but perhaps the system could give them a set of age 20 base skills, so that as the child ages their skills improve until they reach the base levels.
eg - as a baby farming is novice, but as they grow it improves (due to natural aptitude) to efficient at age 20.
however, some skills will stay bad, so as to make babies just like any other 20 year old.
also - maybe children should be able to train skills more easily than adults, because the mind and body of a child are more malleable than that of an oldbie.

Skills should increase faster when you're young. Maybe a hidden learning skill would decrease with age since you can't teach new tricks to an old dog, like they say.
How can a child appriciate being supported by his or her parents if he or she can't remember any of that time? A baby may be an NPC creature but once a child learns to walk and talk, it is too complicated an entity to be computer operated.
A period of dependance is needed to form a bond between the parents and a child. If a player is assigned to a child character that has all the skills of a current newspawn and no memories of the time spent taken care of by the parents, there's no reason to feel gratitude save for possible items given. The feeding and protection would all be in vain.
The meaning of this poll is to figure out how long players could tolerate playing a limited character (I've done it with adult characters, handicapped ones etc and it gets boring after a while). There seems to be a divide in two this far, the ones who are against it and those that would be ready to play for a couple of months.
Maybe another poll would be needed to find out how long people would be ready to take care of a tamagochi-like creature in Cantr. - The most insane suggestion for the duration of the automation period was ten years = 200 days!
I very much doubt anyone would last that long.
