"To Spawn"... Is it bad form/RP?

General out-of-character discussion among players of Cantr II.

Moderators: Players Department, Public Relations Department

Would you / do you use the term "spawn", in character?

Yes, definitely. It is a word, just like any other, and can be used freely, IC.

I use it, sometimes. I would prefer others not to use it, too often.

No, because it is bad form, and others should refrain from using it, unless the absolutely HAVE to.

I never use the term "spawn", because it is really bad role-play. If you can't speak without using it, don't speak at all.

I don't like using "spawn" or "newspawn" i generally uses born.
Well they aren't born when they are in their twenties but i use that word anyway.

Nowadays spawning is a must. If you speak of being born, that qualifies you as a n00b - a stamp which shines miles away. When I read my old turn reports from the early days, I'm embarrassed to see how noobish I looked then. In the beginning it seemed logical to have a background story, just like any good roleplay characters should, but somehow Cantr doesn't accept it - what would justify parents sending their kids out to the world with no equipment, no clothes, no food...? Are we all orphans?

When someone uses 'born' or the 'far away land' thing I always assume they're a newbie. Cantrians aren't born, they come out of the ground or whatever.

And there's a big difference between a twenty year old and a twenty nine year old, so newspawn is an important term for describing or referring to people...I usually call anyone in there twenties who's not holding anything a newspawn. (A couple of my chars use it as a kind of insulting term for clueless people or idiots/jerks in general...I'm not sure what they'd say if they ran into someone like that who was in their thirties, but it hasn't happened yet.)

And like I said, there eventually are going to be people who are 'born' to go along with people who are 'spawned' and there'll probably be a huge difference between the two. To begin with, the people with parents are all going to be rich and have an important place in a town almost guaranteed. They're going to be rare and looked up to and either loved or hated by everyone around them just because they're so different.

There's no way some boring run-of-the-mill newspawn can be 'born' and once babies are implemented I think some chars might take offense at them for lying to try and pretend like they're more important.

Uhh... Marian? Rich and important? Why are they all going to be rich and important people, just because they've been born not spawned?

Because if you go through the trouble of carrying a child for nine months (likely 15 days in Cantr time), you'll be sure to give them food and equipment to make them stay and be healthy, to gain their alliance. Hey, if we added deterioration of skills in old age then people would have a motivation to invest in younger people, since they'd need them when they get old and feeble.

Gain their alliance, Seko? You mean, your child might... turn against you, once it's born? That would be scary. Like, an army of rebellious children, forming bandit-groups, and terrorizing neighbourhoods...

Is that what you mean, Seko?

Yeah. Why would you obey an unfair parent? Of course you'd rebel.

I was told off in game for using spawn once, but I would defend it to the hilt... it's the only word that explains what has occured...

Of course it got a little confusing for a day or two a couple of months ago when suddenly everyone had

Born: day 1449 in Djorf Hills South

I had a bit of a panic that I'd been wrong all along but that disappeared pretty quicjly :)

I have used Brother in two contexts, There was a monastery in one location where the monks were all called Brother XXXXX talk about CRB but everyone else accepted it so there you are, and when I was in a particular clan I called certain people brother, as a demonstration of kinship and our closeness. Not sure other people used the term but it felt right for my RP...

Chars are going to have to be rich to have a baby in the first place, I guess maybe 'important' isn't a requirement, but one usually goes with the other. And it's not like their rich and important parents are going to just kick them out naked on the street to fend for themselves the moment they hit their twenties.

Umm... Marian? Why would you have to be rich, to give birth to someone? Hang on... Have I missed something? I thought anyone could give birth, if they were paired up with someone of the opposite... gender.

I think spawn is the best way to describe concensus into the Cantr world so far,
But,

There is a growing suggestion that players are 'brought up' behind the scenes in the cities, we don't see them but that's where they learn their skills. And it makes sense. Let me explain:

Two ppl need to be in a city for a newspawn to spawn there. That makes sense, two people would have a child, who just wanders around looking at what they do.

Newspawns are based off the skills of current characters in the area. (at least I heard and am pretty sure). This also makes sense because this is like what skills they've seen as they've 'grown up'.

I hope you get what I mean... if you don't, then... oh well.
Nakranoth's "evil" character says:
"Thief! That's terrible! *shakes his head* That would hurt people's feeling if I did that."

Mostly because the pro-children-people want child rearing to be an expensive deal. I.e. not something that two savages living off raw rice can afford.

I tend to disagree, unless we go with Sociologist's suggestion that players be allowed to play their own kids.

Name: ...
Age: 22 years
Spawned: day 1520 in ...
Carrying: 3142g
Location: ...

If the game calls it spawned, then how is using the term incorrect?

Also, in many towns I have visited, the rules clearly tell you to reveal your name if you are a visiter, trader, passerby, or newspawn.

the term spawn is part of cantr, and I use it freely. One of my char's friends even celebrates his spawnday
