There was one guy in Brunoi a month or so back who declared he was "off like a prom dress" before heading out of town. That led to a bit of discussion about dialects and colloquialisms.
Why only old-fashioned characters?

I thought Ranger Locke got slangy a few times every now and again, I assume late at night when his player starts getting lazy.
j/k

Not exactly, I played for about 3 months a couple years back, and I didn't see anybody then.
3 months still constitutes fairly new (yes, you're still a Cantr baby)... no matter when you served your 3 months... Remember, many players have been playing 3 years almost straight... (I'm not one of those 3yrs-er lol though I hope I could be a toddler by now

Hee hee, I think it's been almost three years straight for me now, I'm not sure of the actual date, but it was around the three hundreds. My current account is not my original though.... that one met with a unfortunate end.
Anyway.. back on topic. In theory I don't mind the use of slang as long as it doesn't refer to something that would never be found in game... there are people who use it, not everyone speaks with a more formal, or proper type of speech (though I admit most of mine do).

(Well, I ain't knowing if this is on-topic, but this here charrie of mind used to talk like this. I'm pretty surprised them people [in-game] can understand me that way.) Yeah, the true speech of a forever-farming farmer.
Otherwise, my opinion is same as that of Pirate Lass.

Heh... I've seen people use "dude", and once "dudette", and other words.
And I'd say it's pretty modern to see someone rp a James Bond-spoof, trying to get off a rp-ed technologically advanced longboat.
Though it did get kinda long-winded to see him hit so many rp-ed buttons, with every effect except for the longboat opening up to him.
And in Drojf (or was it Djorf? gah... I keep mixing them up) someone did someone not-so-oldfashioned.
Using a note and seaweed to roll a joint and puff it...
There are many examples of people playing not-so-oldfashioned chars, while still managing to stay pretty consistent with the rest of Cantr.
Those around the Pok/Blojt region might at some point see a completely new slang arrise, "dessit-speek", a mix of a made-up dialect that should still be somewhat understandable, and new slang originating from a slightly crazy desert-dweller.
At least, if he makes it out of the desert to stock up on food again... which he should, if I correctly remembered the number of days the trip took the other way around.

In my opinion, RL slang has no place in cantr... i mean, as was said, you need an aggitator to effect something, and a lot of newspawns simply spawn and say "hi i'm mindy waz ur nme?" And then either sit there till their poor bodies give out, or take a couple of notes, hit everything in sight and run...
It is just an observation that every sane and obviously non-suicidal newspawn is !usually! a well spoken and well written with capital letters and full stops. (Something that truely annoys me ingame, when people choose to ignore simple courtesys like "Hello, I'm Danny." It's not hard to use correct grammar, and its so infuriating when people do not... it just brings down the whole aura of the game when you have noted characters speaking perfectly then some newspawn appears and says "hi im gregg how is everyone today ive just spawned can i have some food 8smiles8)
*pant pant pant*
In short, more successful players socially and physically, speak proper, like what i do.

Should that not be, "as I do"?
But you definitely got a point there, that blasted MSN-speak is a sure way of landing a place on the "must use rl sledgehammer on rl fingers"-list, even outside of Cantr.

There are people who use slang that refers to something that is never to be found in-game, but maybe the real question is how should the characters react to it.
Let's say there's a just man dragging a criminal to jail. Let's just assume the slang is known throughout everyone.
How should the criminal respond to that? If he asked what that mean since "hoosegow" refers to something that is not possible to be found in-game, the just man might respond, and maybe even out of character with an explanation, that he's stupid (do note the assumtion). Or the criminal could just go with the flow, even though it's against his and also the player's beliefs.
This might be a bad example, but does anybody know what I'm saying? I mean, even though the characters heard something that is refering to something out of game doesn't mean that the characters should ignore completely. It's thier nature to question what they don't know if they wanted to, just like in real life (R.L.).

(hoosegow = jail; it's from the Spanish word "juzgado")The just man wrote: Get back in the hoosegow!

Although everything you said was 100% confusing, I think I might understand now. Thankyou oh enlightened one.

Ah. If there were Cantr slang, I'd end up using it in real life. I probably already do. It confuses my friends quite a bit, since they've never even heard of Cantr.
But I've been known to curse Jos a few times in real life. Actually I really just do that to confuse them. Its funny.
And no, I won't mention it to them. they're not cantr-type people. They're the kind of people who actually would rather go outside for some weird reason.

Coramon: Jos, if you didn't know (not quite clear from what you said), is Jos Elkink, the creator of Cantr.
In-game, a long time ago, some characters used him as a god; other characters joined this, and the Church of Jos spread a little and got a few buildings built. That organization's gone now, as far as I know, but "Jos" is still used by a lot of characters as a fun substitute for "God."
