I favor the Composite recurve and compound bows. I haven't seen the compound bow, but Sociologist's post someplace suggests that it's strong.

Those two are the budget weapon technologies (in very different ways), and may be the hope of a new era in warfare. If enough players can get off their carrot-picking tails to participate in the fighting, anyway.

I'm talking about Cantr here...IRL I wouldn't even know how to make sure the arrow moved away from me at all...

I've noticed that alot of people want to fight, just that no one wants to be the guy to start it, ie. the "bad" guy. Plus, there's just too many people with chars on opposite sides in everything, so there isn't much chance of large groups coming to blows because no one wants a char killed.

Why does everyone want to die of old age?

I'm proud of my character's slingshot, and I like her companion's boomerang. Nobody seeing them walk into town would think "now, there's a pair of troublemakers." They think that when they walk out of town, but not when they're just coming in.... ;)

My favorite weapon has got to be the crossbow. It scares the daylights out of quite a lot of people just by the character having one.

I think it makes them look like a couple of naughty schoolkids

If you live in a forest you HAVE to own a composite recurve bow and a wooden shield.. Just adds to the whole elfiness of living amongst the trees!
I dont care if there not the best, Having such mettalic items such as a sabre and an Iron shield would just ruin the natural beauty!

I like Vitzy's Sheeps Wrath... A mace wrapped in wool. What could be wierder than that? Imagine, the force of an angry charging herd packed into a piece of steel...

Nobody wants to start a fight because nobody wants to lose their characters. (Except idiot newspawns, but they usually can't cause much damage and are slaughtered immediately afterwards anyway.)

Any character can attack another, but because of the way combat works they're likely to be killed themselves before they can do much damage to their victim. Even an entire band of bandits or soldiers vs an entire town is going to be pretty one-sided, even if the soldiers have superior weapons - they just wear themselves out in the first round of the fight and then can be dragged away into buildings for the townspeople to kill at their leisure.

(Actually, a multi-location war where both sides are fighting each other in a neutral town would be pretty interesting, but very unlikely...)

Anyway, I think all that's why about the only effective criminals you see around are pirates, since it's a relatively low-risk profession with a boat providing a quick getaway.
