I have only lost two characters that I hade time to develop enough to really miss them. One died in such a good way I was almost happy to see her go, but the other was killed by a group of CR breachers...and that didn't feel very funny. He was such a great character too...

She was one of the oldest. And she'd have lived a lot longer yet, I think. But for some reason, her player cut back on characters.

*growls at the relevant Cantr God*

then the whole town went crazy, well not exactly whole, like 3 people or something.....

We didn't all go crazy, only two characters did that I saw. Well. Three-ish now.

Deterioration is currently slow, so I would think the poor won't suffer so much...but yes, excess items are a major hardship. In fact, an eventually catastrophic problem, with major short-term effects as well. Now on the way to being repaired. :D

And since it takes about 30% of my energy to hit an animal and do 1-3% damage to it (once per day only, no matter how many there are), I'm really not surprised. The animals have the upper hand in this game.

It takes me 0.5% per attack to hit animals, last I checked...and punching animals just makes them more likely to hurt you, really, unless it's part of a concerted effort. Animals only have the upper hand on new islands where there are no strong weapons yet (and probably never will be...) Also, it doesn't take much shiled to shrug off nearly all animal attacks. A buckler or a bone shield is plenty.

Incidentally, I think animals only attack in towns, never on roads. And never in buildings, if you hadn't noticed.

mortaine wrote:I also thought this was supposed to be a RP-heavy game, but I gotta be honest-- who has time to role-play when you only get 200 minutes to send a message, 20 minutes of which will be spent waiting for the game to even load?

It takes you 20 minutes to load cantr? What internet connection are you using? Even with abysmal dialup I never took over 5...and that was at bad times. You reallize 200 minutes is over 3 hours. You really shouldn't be using it all up, though lots of people (me included sometimes) do.

mortaine wrote:But I digress. This thread is about the loss of a beloved, long-time character, and so I take my hat off and say "rest in peace."

On the original topic...Tom Sawyer? Was that the Tom Sawyer in QF? I didn't see him leave, if it was. It it's him one of my characters will miss him, and another will dance on his unmarked grave.

The first death is always hard, or so I'd think. Then you learn that these things happen, and live on. You just have to keep your eyes open and notice the risks. It's always terrible when it happens by surprise. You think that you can speak people over or dodge a strike or find food in the next location, but sometimes shit happens and you die.

It's annoying that so many people had to die just because there is no warning, you really have to keep an eye on the meters. Many people got to collect things from the ground that they don't deserve or maybe even cannot use, then these people will sit around and die of the sleeping sickness and someone else will take the stuff... A deathwave of this is unnatural but I bet Cantrians will develop many explanations for it.

Right-- sorry; I was tired when I wrote that. An animal takes 30% of my damage when it hits me, and I do 1-3% damage to it. I haven't figured out how tired I get when I attack. I think I heard from someone else that hitting takes 30% of your tiredness, which might be where I got the garbled information.

Animals only have the upper hand on new islands where there are no strong weapons yet (and probably never will be...) Also, it doesn't take much shiled to shrug off nearly all animal attacks. A buckler or a bone shield is plenty.

Buckler and bone shield are not always available. They require tools to make-- tools that generally require iron. I understand it used to be a lot easier to make these things, but no more. And more than half of my characters are in the French Ghetto, where there are few resources except corpses to speak of.

Incidentally, I think animals only attack in towns, never on roads. And never in buildings, if you hadn't noticed.

Uh, no. They might only attack in "non-road areas," but I just had a character die to a boar attack, out in the wilderness somewhere.

I've used up my 200 minutes consistently for the last 3 or 4 days. There was also the day that I lost 180 minutes between one click and the next-- with no explanation. It takes 7 or 8 minutes to load a single page from cantr.net, and that's not from my internet connection. I've got dedicated DSL at home and a T1 or better at work, and every other site on the net loads like lightning. It's a problem on the cantr server, and it's irritating because it takes away my minutes.

It's a little frustrating, especially because playing my FL characters means I have to take extra time already if I want them to speak (I'm competent, but am brushing up on grammar while I play).

Oh no, bone shield requires only a bone knife - and if you have bones for the shield then you have bones for a knife as well. In many places there are piles of bones just lying around.

In many places, you get killed for even looking at stuff on the ground.

But in any case: the bones are there because dangerous animals are there.

Here's what happened with the late, unlamented Andre:
Go out to the wilderness cause he can't find any useful resources where he spawned (including food).
Wander into a swamp.
Get attacked by crocodiles. Twice, because 180 minutes mysteriously disappeared between one click and the next and I had to wait about 14 real-world hours before I could get into the game again.
Grab bones and run away.
Starving on the road.....
Stop at a nearby hillside to use the bones to make weapons. Still starving, by the way.
Get killed by boar while trying to make knife to defend oneself.

Die alone, nameless, unnoticed, his body laying next to one of many such unburied and unburiable dead (unburiable because of the dangerous animals in the area).

That's odd, I have cable and my Cantr has been loading fine, it normally takes me just a few seconds to load a page on Cantr.

Ditto...whatever your connection, it is something on your side. Unless you consistantly log in at the wrong times (the hour changes can be sluggish, though not that sluggish usually). I mean, if you mean 7-8 seconds, that could be Cantr sometimes. 7-8 minutes? Never seen that happen.

I named shields that didn't take any hard resources. Bone can be done with just animal parts. Buckler needs hide, wood, shone hammer...I don't think anything else.

You need to distinguish areas, though. Foreign language, except maybe german (or dutch?) tends to be at a barbaric leve because there are hardly any spawns. And if you play as a loner the animals are certain to get you. In the english area the population is significant...and the problems are very different.

The server will be slower at times, when lots of people are online...

And there's something you directly can do about that. DONATE so Jos can pay for a better, more powerful server to run the game on. I'm sure most of you can afford to give Cantr a $5 christmas present or something?

I did donate, just this week, in fact. And I do understand the server being slow. I clocked it this morning-- it was 6 minutes to load the page after logging in; it's obviously a bottleneck in the databases, because cantr.net homepage, while slow, isn't that slow, but all the pages inside the game and all the forums are.

No, oddly enough, Sparkle had a character named Tom Sawyer before I had made mine. I actually ran across one of his notes recently with another character. They exist(ed) on different continents, so never knew each other.

No dancing for you.

Well I'm using a piece of crap that Dell calls a computer and I'm not having that much trouble. Every now and then I'll hit times when it takes a little bit to load a page, but I have not used all 200 minutes of my cantr time in about a year and a half. In fact I barely ever get under 60 minutes and when I do it's because I was playing cantr while doing other things like homework.

Anyhow, Jos has been saying the server can't really handle all the traffic. You need to donate some money. Something that I would have done by now if I didn't lose all my summer wages. Now I have to spend every dime I have on christmas presents and that's after borrowing from my brother. Sorry Jos, but you're going to have to wait til next year.
