OK, we all got booted because DALnet are exceptionally awkward sods.
Because we were all connecting from one place (that website), and because DALnet does not like multiple users from the same IP address, that IP has been blocked temporarily.
I'll try to find a workaround.
Leaving the server field at the default will connect you to IRC - but the wrong server. Which is why you'll have found different people there.
Jos, why did you choose DALnet again?

sorcery.net has pretty reliable IRC hosting.
It's not hard at all to download mIRC or Trillian or Opera so you don't have to use the java applet--mIRC is pretty much the standard IRC software, Trillian is a multifeatured chat program, and Opera is also a fully functioning web browser and email client (I'm typing this in one tab, surfing fark.com in another, on an IRC channel (in sorcery.net) in another, and reading my email in another. Oh, life is good.)

I'm not dead; I'm dormant.

I talked to some DALnet operators. The problem was the 'real name' setting for those logging in through the applet, which was identical for everybody.
Setting it to empty doesn't seem to work - the applet simply refuses - so now I removed the anonymous login and you can only use the applet after logging in to the site, after which is will use your recorded real name as real name.
However, I am unable to test this, as the applet now refuses to load in the first place ... I am too tired to solve it now, though.
You can of course still use regular IRC clients like mIRC to access the channel. There are still some people there

I still can't login, also not with the applet after login. I think it might be because I'm in a LAN behind a router (physical firewall). I already set up data forwarding, so that I should be able to use port 7000 like everybody else, but it still doesn't work. Perhaps DALnet has particularly strict policies about IDENT or the like, because I have no problem logging on to Undernet, EFnet or Unilang's IRC server, using mIRC (without changing anything in the settings).
How'bout creating a Cantr room on one of these servers instead? That should be much easier than creating an own IRC server. Or set up a bot that connects e. g. #cantr on Undernet to #cantr on DALnet.

*sigh*
I don't really want to move all the time as I have the feeling we will find different problems on each of those servers and we'll end up with three #cantr channels each with very few people in them.
And bots are not allowed with our provider. Otherwise I'd like that solution, probably.
Not sure what to do now
... Everyone has their own preference for a server, so I can hardly move everytime someone asks. Of course, not being able to access at all is quite a bit worse.
*thinks*
Why can't things just work?
