How about a bulletin board in the center of town for people to tack messages onto? That way the important stuff wouldn't require actual note objects, and once a board is built the government can authorize shopkeepers or whoever else to use it.

Oh, and I just found out that there *is* something more annoying than a note thief; that would be a note thief that deletes all the notes they stole right before they die. Grr...

I will still contend that there are many newbies who totally innocently become in our mind "thieves."

I did it myself with my first two characters.

Many people's background in previous role playing games involved games where the game setting involved buildings to be explored and items to be "found". With that background, and no real explanation of things in some areas, it is no suprise that many newbies take things and walk in and out of buildings. And what do we do but BLAST them off the Cantr with crossbows.

Anyway, one of my first characters was spawned in an area where no note was posted telling people not to take stuff, yet I got shot, and was told it was my fault. Now I know that it was my character being told this, but when you are new, you are not yet able to make that detachment. It seemed to me that people were calling me an idiot, and so on. A second character saw that a note said a business was a sewing business, so he went in. While no one was inside, he decided to experiment with a few machines and resources in there- discover his surroundings. He also got shot and stabbed and dragged to jail.
Anyway, I appreciate these things now, but I almost quite because it was very frustrating.
This is the type of thief who does not know he is a thief, and it would be nice if a newbie guide would help not create them.

By the way, how do you delete a note?
I think, therefore I think I am, I think

I think she means just delete the contents of an editable note.

when I first started again, I had one character take everything on the ground and use stone on a building and everything...he is still alive to this day!!! he is still doing community service, but still alive!!

Many people do that when they start out. They dont realise how long it takes to get from one location to another, and they need food, so they take some. It doesnt click in their mind that they are stealing. Most RPG's, stuff on the ground is open grabs.

I have a few characters that advocate the "If you don't want it stolen, don't leave it on the ground" school of thought. It's a good one. A conscientious town might even have a "newspawn dump" in the town square where newbies can do stuff like that without worrying about being chased or killed. Nothing valuable, of course. Just food.

I was running out of ideas and goals for my new chars. So one was spawned and decided to be a thief. However she did speak and doesn't think she is a thief. It pissed some people off but hey, thats the fun in the game. She is my first thief and so far she's pretty good at it.

Like Lumera said if it wasn't far criminals there would be know need for government are prisons. I don't care what kind of thief you are, when they are around my chars. it gives them excitement. It's fun doing what you have to do to that criminal. Just like the murders and attackers. It just wouldn't be Cantr without them and soon as my chars. run out of goals I will have one of those too. I've been playing Cantr off and on for a long time now and has never made these types of chars. but now that I have it's kinda fun out running and loosing guards. :D
a day without cantr, is a day spent in bed convulsing and suffering from withdrawl

well yah, what do you expect to happen? the towns and roads are to well controled, so the thieves turn to boats. then theres the fact that some resources are just to valuable to resist when they fall to the ground.

not to mention that theres a little Pirate in us all dont you think? In some peoples cases... a big pirate I guess.

the pirates who have been around a while, kicked some butt... died or got away. awesome RP. the pirates who happened to steal an open boat, kill a person on accident and start hitting towns with no sense of self... just sad, really sad. its like all trendy things, there are those that set it, and those that follow because its the thing to do. :)

but enough about pirates lets get back to thieves.

Yeah, one of my favorite characters is one of those. Quite successful.
