My character stole 1000 iron , a hammer , a sledgehammer, 2500 hematite, 500 iron ore, and a wooden sheild. and had only worked for the company for not even a week.

Several of my characters ARE making iron. That isn't the point.
The problem is that iron WAS easy to make and is now HARD to make. Considering how many powerful tools don't take steel but do take iron, and especially since the best shield is iron, iron should be expensive. The problem is that iron used to be cheap. In oppressive reasons, only the people who already have iron (or manage to join up with the government) can get more.
To some degree, iron is the new steel. Of course, you make iron now at about half the rate you used to make steel, and you tend to use MORE iron to make things... The key problem is that iron used to be low-tech. Now it's medium-tech, unless you already have it, as so many people do.
By the way, this is a forum. If memory serves, you discuss things on a forum. What you don't do is make iron on a forum.
