I had a pirate with a shoe fetish and still people refused to go along...gimme your shoes...no my lover made these for me when I was 2 days old...no really gimme your MFing shoes and I'll leave you be. NO, your so mean you big old so and so. We've already won do you really want to go round with me and 7 others over a pair of shoes? Your not taking my shoes you will have to kill me! O.o (your kidding me right?)

Pushing this a little bit I learned these type of characters would however let me rape them, beat them, abuse them in anyway I could possibly come up with but the shoes would not come off. This resulted in a lot of ladies being ignored because shoe fetish is not rape and beat you half to death fetish. It also resulted in a lot of ladies that would willingly give up shoes even if he didn't force them. Funny how that works. :)

I've actually run into some pretty "well-played" pirates. And by well-played I mean consistent and in some cases disturbingly diabolical. I agree that it is an uphill battle to maintain anything of substance and it requires some truly remarkable role play to develop a multifaceted individual who can be loved by some and reviled by others.

It's hard to justify piracy when you already have wealth and friends. A lonely person might attack towns for attention, and a poor person for wealth, but if someone is neither lonely nor poor, they have more to lose than to gain.

Oh, its more then possible to play a well rped pirate. I wouldnt even require any kind of love hate relationship, just an effort to display your charries motivation andadd some colour to the game. Be a paper cut out who only cares for plunder and death but show me that you care. More often then not I see rp sacrificed for simple efficency (dock, silent lightening raid, undock). I realize they do it for increased survivability and probably rp on the safety of their ship but I cant see that section of their lives and I refuse to appreciate a major inflence on my story that is caused by a voluntary mute. All you have to do is have a window with stock phrases open in another window and anyone could easily spice up a pirate raid. Sorry for the response, I started writing and things got a little out of hand, this seems to have turned into a mini rant :p

Or characters might roleplay this that seems very simple to do?

The pirates might make the agreement ingame but I don't see other people deciding to actively leave a nest of pirates alone, especially if they knew they could attack any of them any moment. It would only work if the pirates didn't attack anyone on that island and no one on the victim island knew where the base was.

My suggestion would be to trade safety of the base for safety from pirates. The pirates arent allowed to steal from locals and they will attack any pirates who attempt to raid the area. This of course could be accomplished (and would be cooler) in game.

Good thinking. Or maybe there could be privateers who are approved by their native region and only attack foreigners (or people of another island).

We just need a culture to develop where it's OK to steal from the weak, like the Greyjoys in A Song of Ice and Fire.

Kind of like Stone Knights or Blackrocks of the sea, but more aggressive.

Anything more aggressive then the Blackrocks would be crushed in its infancy, even the Blackrocks barely survived. I don't think a pirate nation will ever develop from the begining of a structured organisation like the blackrocks or stone knights. To me the best chance is Seko's privateer notion, some kind of framework so people wouldnt immediatly think evil (the curse of a fundementally good aligned player base stricks again).

I know of some islands where pirates could easily start up. Some of them you can even sail over for some reason.
