I would love for this to somehow be coded into the game but until then I would avoid it unless it was somehow explicitly known that this was how such things would work.

I'd support it. I miss dice in RPGs even more than the pencil and paper.

It could be cheat proofed with a virtual dice simulator. There are ones out there that send an email of the results to both parties (or more?) so the possibility of cheating should not exist. When I used to GM Axis and Allies games and a few other things, we used them exclusively.

There may be better ones, but here is an example:

This dice roller will roll up to 1000 rolls using up to five different dice combinations. The results will be mailed to one to five email addresses. To use, fill in the form with the appropriate information and hit the Submit button. It supports many kinds of dice and should handle rolls for most RPG or PBM games, or fantasy leagues.
