Re: Storage Mechanics
Is it volume or weight (er, mass), though?
In the metric system (which seems to be the popular system on Cantr), mass is measured in grams. In real life, a gram of water is a milliliter, or cubic centimeter, of water (and I hope I got the prefixes correct). For Cantr, the distinction between mass and volume could be solved by a simple thing such as:
· resources (water, brandy, tomatoes, etc.) are assigned a number of cubic centimeters per gram, which follow a linear scale
· items are assigned a static number
· storage items can store a maximum of X grams OR some Y cubic centimeters (whichever is achieved first)

Re: Storage Mechanics
It is both volume and mass. SInce there is no gravity (?) in Cantr, there is no weight. Though we call it weight.
Volume is currently not used.

Hehe, talk about convenience! Does this topic warrant a move to the suggestions, or is it happy here for further discussion?

I am sure there is aldready at least one topic about this in the suggestion forums somewhere. It has been discussed many times before.

Re: Storage Mechanics
I was also going to suggest that items/resources in containers be shown in order of density (the ones that sink to the bottom go on the bottom of the list.....well, it makes sense to me anyway).
Gimme a moment, and I'll find the thread.

Re: Storage Mechanics
That is already in development. Ordering and visibility of content in an unlocked container.

Hey, you can stick boats in glass bottles, why not sledgehammers? If 'in case of emergency' you could use another sledge to...nm.

Re: Storage Mechanics
What gives you the idea there's no gravity in Cantr? You can clearly drop things.
Anyway, while volume is technically already in the game, it has been completely disregarded in the creations of new items so far. That means that the volume of many items was simply cloned from a possibly completely unrelated item and doesn't make any sense at all.
General classes like "small", "medium", "large" or "long" would be much more convenient and not create any additional work since we had to go over each and every item anyway.

Re: Storage Mechanics
You could maybe get rid of long and just use large, essentially just using the longest dimension as the determining factor. How many big things do we have that wouldn't fit in the long category anyway? Maybe vehicle frames? Lets figure out the smallest and largest items, so that we have a good frame of reference to work from. Would this be correct?
smallest: needle
largest: vehicle frames
Below is a rough categorization of containers I came up with. I tried to rank them a little bit so it would be easy to shift the categorizations. I would also recommend getting rid of the small vs large bottles, crates, and barrels, and only have one type of each, as well as to get rid of the "container" entirely or at least rename it, since it seems incredibly ambiguous, especially when we have so many types of distinct containers.
SMALL
Silver spoon
Wooden spoon
Steel flask
Carved wood mug
Earthenware mug
Tin cup
Tin can
Goblet
Small glass bottle
Stein
Ceramic plate
Fine china plate
Wooden plate
Earthenware bowl
Silver platter
Ceramic teapot
Large glass bottle
MEDIUM
Amphora
Apothecary kit
Reed basket
Grass basket
Wooden shelf
Drawer
Small wooden crate
Canvas duffel
Small barrel
LARGE
Burlap sack
Armoire
Barrel
Cabin-trunk
Chest
Container
Large barrel
Large wooden crate
Oil drum
Small silo
smallest: needle
largest: vehicle frames
