So picking up envelopes and notes/scrolls would be a good reason to kill someone, or a whole city of someones until the scroll was handed over? Hmmm, It might be feasible as almost an 'in-game' wiki. I suspect that within a few cantr decades, just about everyone would be walking around with a dozen envelopes. Since the population has been decreasing (a trend I hope we can reverse!), there could be notes lying around every major battle location. This could simulate the crawling affect that knowledge sometimes has I guess.
But I am playing ignorant, just as Doug suggested.
Small talk...we need a fantasy gladiator league or something, that would get the guys talking at least...now that I think about it, the ladies too. I think the 3 baddest individuals I have seen so far in cantr were all ladies. "How about them Bears...err...I mean them Blackrocks?"
Be well

I am not sure that would happen, may be scrolls for basic techs but definitely not the important ones. They'll be safely guarded. People will share their important knowledge with only those that they trust, thus leading to stronger and bigger communities.

If information wasn't bound to objects, it would require attackers to leave someone alive if they wanted to extract information from them. Maybe it would even allow built-in torture. You would select from a list which information you wanted to extract from a person, and if they didn't have the information, they would tell you something random just to put an end to the pain, and the random information would most likely not work but sometimes it could lead into a crudely functional item. Like about anybody could make an item that looks like a sword, but to make a sword that doesn't shatter into pieces on the first hit, or one that is correctly balanced or one that has a flexible blade or an ergonomic grip, that would require skill.

Side issue: it would have an effect on towns' rarity industries.
