Re: Surprising Descriptions
We should definitely have a rating system, somehow.
Or, alternatively, perhaps we should just be able to see character strength? My character descriptions are true to the strength skill, somehow I doubt every player will be so honest!

Re: Surprising Descriptions
I don't think strength should be seen. And I'm not sure you can define how a person should look based on strength. Obviously someone very weak shouldn't have "bulging muscles" in their description, but some people don't look as strong as they are. I picture one of my chars as on the smaller, leaner side even though they are stronger than average.

Re: Surprising Descriptions
Yea, one of mine doesn't look like she's as strong as she actually is. I know people in RL that are that way.
I only use the strengths and skills to help with my description if it's important to the character (though I wouldn't say a character looks strong/bulging with muscle if they were weak or something.).

Censor me if we're not supposed to quote stuff from change logs but this one made me lol:
I don't know who it is but I wonder how my characters would react if they saw something like that.
Me too. I hope they'll get around to it.
2898-7:03 Player ****** changed description of char ****** to: "You see a huge bulge through his trousers. "
(From: "You see a huge wang bulging through his trousers. ")

Re: Surprising Descriptions
My first character spawned in a town with a purple leader. I love this char (leader) by now and know the history/ reasoning, but I was too polite on spawning and way to new to the concept of Cantr but it was surprising. It has to be one of the best descriptions I've seen.
At the time I was wondering if I could make my chars multi- coloured or non - human though. I know better now!
I was also surprised by a character entering a description way after I got close to them and it didn't fit with my image of them. It still bugs me.

Re: Surprising Descriptions
I wonder what an ingame reason can be to have a purple char?
There is no rule that says I can't post as much I want. I asked my lawyer.

I'm not telling, but my char believed it.

Re: Surprising Descriptions
I have a char that's description matches what her mate told her she looked like, since she had never seen herself. That was very handy as she was really the only one I didnt want to ruin by making her look completely different than she did in the other players eyes.

Re: Surprising Descriptions
I am curious as to how much changing of the descriptions we can get away with. I expect I will learn quite soon.
I am not talking about changing musculature or eye color etc. But I have a character who sometimes engages in...vigorous...activities. Would it be bad to change the description temporarily to reflect the 'post-vigor' effects. possibly something like..."looks kinda sweaty with ruffled hair" ect.
Maybe;
-"Has some minor cuts, bruises;
-claw marks,
-lightly wounded from battle,
-blood matted hair,
-sea-salt eroded face, skin, other appendages,
-Covered with coal soot/dust
and so on. I don't know if doing this sort of thing would place a burden on the server (I am computer illiterate) or not so I have only played around with this a few times. I guess I will be contacted if its discouraged. It seems like a potentially great roleplaying device, but only if you typically check a persons appearance. I generally do and then add the description to me 'pop-ups' when I rest my cursor on a persons character, I often double check these things (thus rp'ing memory?) and sometimes notice when someone changes their description and RP based on that: "oh, you did your hair!" "Is that a new dress you are wearing?" ect.
Its all in-character knowledge; but I just wondered if this is a valid tool that the designers had in mind when we were given this ability?
Be well

I've met this char, and I still laugh about it. Anyways, it brings a good point to RP with "that"

Re: Surprising Descriptions
I have a char who sleeps a lot, therefore in the desc I have him also appear that way.
*laying on the ground, drooling*or something.

If something happens to my charries, I change the description. Ex: One got a stain on her shirt and the stain got lighter in appearance with every wash, one of my characters punched a wall and so had bruised knuckles for a while, on of my characters had hickies on her neck, etc etc.

Re: Surprising Descriptions
Thanks Kelli.
Regarding the "laying on the ground and drooling"...well, when I stopped laughing at the clever description. I wondered if you change it when you are awake...I guess that if you were drunk enough the description would still apply.
Then I started to wonder about 'sleepers' who were actually taking on long jobs and not logging on during that time. One of my characters has made jokes about how the jobs is so easy the "I can do it in my sleep", but how should our descriptions be altered to reflect this? "Just minding his own business whilst working?"
I play with descriptions when something changes about my character and try to keep it as a purely visual thing. "he has a stained shirt" etc and maybe an emotion if it is intense enough that there is little chance of misinterpretation. (furious, crying)

I have altered desciptions to suit the circumstances and I can think of at least four others who do too. I works very well for me. I've been doing this for a while around people on this forum and no one has tut tuted me, but maybe they just havsn't noticed..... I have kept withinn the purely visible spectrum.
