I would never tell who my characters were. I also would rather not know who is behind other characters. The anonymity is part of the alure of the game. My guess is that those who make it known who their characters are (except you Pixie), are saying "look what I did!" or trying to one-up others.
If a character has died, that can be a different story. Relating the past of a dead character is not giving away anything, really, unless it is recently deceased and the knowledge of the death can still effect the game.

If you drive an old Chevy, you're all right by me!

Some of the people I talk to most often know who some of my chars are, but my higher profile chars (who are now mostly dead) haven't been secreat for a while, mostly because they would be brought up in OOC conver and I'd have to defend them
...but it's sorta nice that they are dead, no one knows which of my new chars to look out for

Only thing I like microwaved is hotdogs...nukem til they're exploded and crispy *drools* Of course I'm expecting the day when we find out that microwaves cause cancer like everything else.

Crap. Now, I guess I'll just "love the smell of napalm in the mornin!" [Duvall]
*ignites some napalm gel, to cook his ratdogs.*
Edit: (cont.) Apocalypse Now (1979): You smell that? Do you smell that? Napalm, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for twelve hours. When it was all over I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end...
