Lets just say if you caught me in October or December I'd have said "HELL YEAH! $5 to play ALL I WANT!? AWESOME!"
Then after about three or so months I'd have been, "Wow... okay, well its not a bad game but not worth $5. I kinda want my money back, now."
However, programmers (or anyone) should get paid for their work. I'd just "miss out" if it started costing money... is all. (That's not the point of this thread... well kinda, but whatever.)

I have been (and will continue to) be content to play a few $/month to play online games if required. However, I can't imagine this type of game gaining many subscribers using this model. Perhaps if you break it into the usual free/premium membership, but honestly - pay for play brings a whole raft of new issues. It means the player base will expect active development, for starters, plus a whole higher level of quality (interface etc), and professional level support.
Makes much more sense to stick with donations, IMHO.

Either you donate all your fucking money to Cantr RIGHT NOW, 'cause, you know, accidents could happen at YOUR house, too!
