Seeing a guy you have a crush on get dragged into a building and imagining they must be a goner, you run back to your boat and undock, only to hear OOC that the building they got dragged into wasn't locked at the point so he could get out but by the time he got to the harbour, the boat was gone and he was dragged back inside and killed. This was two and a half years ago irl but I'll never forget.

I see recent drops that are substantial on both graphs. :-(

Holy crap, I didn't realize it was that bad! No wonder there are so many ghost towns.

I was curious to see the trends for the Polish, the other big group of players in Cantr.

The Polish population seems to be stabilizing after a long downward trend. In contrast, the English population seems to be declining after a long period of stabilization.

So there's only 400 or so Enlish language players now? That's the RP equivalent of being back in high school again.

I recently got to witness an entire crew of a ship die within two days, all from heart attacks.

That sucks. Those graphs might be the most depressing thing on this thread.

What can ya do, I guess. Keep playing and hope more people join.

Uhhuh... English Zone is just ripe for picking, or at least half of it.

Is it the domino effect, I wonder? The loss of so many of the older characters makes me feel like walking away from Cantr sometimes....

Between that and the lag....

Seeing the first person you ever met, and have been at the side of for a full fourty years, healthy and powerful, drop dead to leave you with everything and nothing... You're now powerful... but you're not active enough to really be that power...

I think that graph says english players have 2,600 ?? or am I reading wrong..

Can anyone give a basic explanation to the decline? Ie dead marketing department, or something??
Nakranoth's "evil" character says:
"Thief! That's terrible! *shakes his head* That would hurt people's feeling if I did that."

I think, mainly...

Lag -> less RPing -> more innactivity -> boredom

Lag likely because Cantr DB is bigger but not better than a year ago.

Not better because we have no programers working in the code. And it would need alot of work. Any "simple" change in the DB structure for optimizing the queries would mean numerous small changes en many code pages, and then many bugs and DB crashes and complains, and more work to fix them.
And we have few and tire programmers. So tire that they are even weary to teach new ones.

~2600 English characters, ~400 English players.

I bet tha lag plays a role. But I think that online games have a natural life cycle. If they have any success at all, it is difficult to sustain the peak subscriber level. There are other games out there as competition -- many more than existed a few years ago. People who once had time for the game have life changes (school, job, relationship) that leave them with less leisure time.
