Well without profit then you cannot expand and get bigger thus everything stays on a small scale. Plus without profit things get pretty hard for business. Lets say my character was to trade a trowel he made and was only to get back what material he used to make. Plus you would have to count in a little extra for labor but in the end my character doesn't really gain anything thus now he has enough to make another trowel and a little extra on the side that he can't really do anything with until he perhaps trades a more trowels. He could always hire someone but then he would have to give something as payment for his or her labors which take away from him. Now this character can only trade one trowel every now and then so prospectic customers will either have to wait or just od it themselves. So you see where such a system has its failings and the reason why the Middle Ages under the Feudal system weren't too great. That and the noblility had everything and the peasants had nothing so under this system the nobility kept everything and the peasants remained poor. It wasn't until a middle class rose and moved away from the feudal systems that locked them in a certain place in society and centered their work on towns that became cities. But to do that they had to make a profit so that they could expand and grow bigger which in essence helped the societies more because now the peasants could get as rich or even richer as the nobles. This also led to the fall of the nobiliy class and feudal system as well as new technologies in warfare killed off many young nobles in combat because it was considered honorable to fight in the field of battle on horseback, in heavy armor, with a lance or a sword. One problem was that the soldiers with bows and arrows and later guns didn't have any problem with shooting a knight on horseback.

Now I'm done rambling for the moment.

Politics and warfare all in one post, if it ain't multi-topic covering it doesn't get the RLK stamp of approval. Gotta be your trade mark skill, you can put that on a CV 'Multi-topic covering posting ability on forums' that has got be a real executive position pulling skill! It gets my thumbs up.

I'm a firm believer in cause and effect and how everything affects each other in one way or another. That is why I love history so much. And I just get into rambling mode and can't stop typing and thinking and sometimes I don't even know what I'm typing. I'm always thinking. I've also been told that I'm always moving and I'm always multi-tasking and that I should sit down and take a break for ten minutes but I can never sit still for too long. I always need to be doing something or at least thinking. It's just the way I am. So back to the point of the story is that I'll be thinking something else but then my mind changes topics and I blend it perfectly with what I was just thinking before. At least that is whay I'm thinking....at the moment.

I have a business that deals mainly with buying imported resources and manufacturing them. Manufacturing is the main profit raker of my business. It is quite profitable for a low scale business, with very high profit rates. I compare them OOC with another, larger business owner in the town, and although their pay roll is about 10 times mine, I still have aroudn the same ammount of profit

Well to be successful in today's cantr, all you need to do is build a smelter and an anvil, stock up on supplies then there you go, make loads of steel, trade it as steel, or in tools and weapons, as everyone wants steel.

You would think so. But I find that labour with tools is the best commodity. Importing is very expensive.

Exporting is expensive, but if your business is well established, you can get your customers to come to you for their steel goods.
A lot of times you can pay your exporting costs becasue it's really easy to rip people off in cantr since resources are to easy to come by. I've traded resources from 3 locations away for 5 times their worth in labor because I demanded pay for the work I spent to import them.

How can you trade in steel? It is just so much more valuable than anything else. How would you price it? 100g of steel for 10000g of iron?

Steel isn't a business, it's an empire.

Yes but do you have as much power? Sometimes it pay to inflate your payroll just to get more people under your thumb for political and social reasons. Then again, IRL it has been averaged for every $1 a corporation puts into lobbying the government they get something like $4 to $10 back. Its more profitable to have a company that does nothing but play a 3 card monty game, nowadays that is why all the Manufracturing jobs are gone  .

The basic environment and interface of Cantr makes that difficult at best, but I haven't seen any places with laws against prostitution :P Maybe if STD's are implemented though
