They would need to learn any other language, yes. Even if the player behind them already knows it. Just as a Polish character would need to learn English when coming across and English character, even if the player knows the language.

Oasis it's absolutely clear
But we disscus (IMO) just how to help english players to understand basics of polish language, which should help them. As the contacts beetwen our zones are growing, it's became impportant. I will once again quote Wichita
I do agree that it needs to be roleplayed as much as possible, but it does take A LOT of work to try and figure out a language purely from immersion in Cantr. I would encourage players who are going to be dedicated to the roleplaying of the learning process to learn the language outside of the game.
Just looking for a little OOC boost so I can help my characters overcome their learning curve. Smile It is much easier to roleplay learning when you know the end answer yourself.
You can roleplay weaker than yourself, you can roleplay stronger than yourself; you can roleplay dumber than yourself, but you can't roleplay smarter and wiser than yourself. Wink

I was actually answering CDL's question, though I might have misunderstood.
So the question is between learning a new language from inside the game, or outside first. I think it can be done either way.......likely more realistically ingame, though it doesn't hurt to have those little hints by knowing some of the words already.
I have come in contact with three Polish speaking characters recently, and both were gone before mine had a chance to really try to communicate. Theirs spoke in full sentences, and didn't seem to try to break it down, no pointing, etc. Of course, two of them knew a bit of English, and used it. Whether they should have or not is another question.
