This particular thread is about a change in a particular rule in the game (or more to the point outside the game) - not about changes in rules in general .

The rule which changed was that originally, game mechanics, item capabilities and construction could only be found out in game and were not to be discussed in these Forums or anywhere else outside the game.

I figured everything out on my own, I use the wiki to find the leand about objects in the game that chars have to make. I've added a bunch of stuff.

AND BACK TO TOPIC: I don't know what to add. Does it really need to be discussed?

Because it's a quite long topic, I did not read it all.

Does this also mean you can actually figure out in the wiki how to make steel, what resources you need, etc and based on that decide in which location your character starts his company, decide which things he will build. Even if your character could not know this in game?

For example, you need salt to make leather for a pair of bellows. Is my character allowed to get salt for the leather, even if he did not know how to make leather or even knew he needed a pair of bellows for making steel?

You could solve this of course by just saying you wanted to check out how leather looks and whatever, but it would not be very 'real' (it would be more easy and would take less time in game to reach some basic goals of your character).

Yeah, I'm afraid that's what it means ;) ... You can still make your roleplaying a little more interesting by playing that you have to find out in game, but yes, you can just use the wiki for your gameplay.

Not *where* to build your town, though ... you still need in-game maps to know directions. The maps or any location or character specific information still falls strictly under the find-out-in-game rule.

True. But when your character has a map which also states the resources available, it's quite easy to position your town properly.

Right now I'm being thrown between good role playing and just simply start a business and then get into the interesting role playing (being Dutch between Spanish and German characters is interesting enough, I guess).

Yeah, I know. You can quickly recognize the experienced newspawns, since they're usually very pro-active. But I'm not sure the game suffers much damage from people who really try to build things up :) ... If you only build and don't roleplay, it gets boring, but if you roleplay like a grown-up rather than a knows-nothing, I think it's perfectly fine. I must admit I often do the same with my newspawns. Some I make dumb and some I just make very productive and pro-active, and the latter are usually more fun to play.

How can developers not have time for documentation?
A good developer writes code that tests the code as well as the documentation to all features _before_ implementing anything. Also, all tests and documentation must be kept accurate at all times.

The developers barely have time for developing, much less documentation. The Wiki is kept up by the players and is generally accurate.

Personally, I've never even clicked on the wiki. Not that I dont think its a useless thing, I just never have. I run D&D games...the way I do knowledge is you either dont know it or you have seen or been told how its done. I try to RP all my newspawns as babies who know how to speak but know squat. Maybe " general kowledge" should be stated in the core rules someplace which keeps people from having to ask such, not stupid ,but redundant questions. Give an example also. Maybe its already being done in the wiki, idunno, I'm the ignorant one thats never looked at it and I played this game for 2-3 years 2-3 years ago and just coming back. * shrugs*

You're a good guy, you know that? Not many people have the brains or skill to put a little bit of hard work and effort into RolePlaying these days. Good work. :)
