Is it common for new players to leave? I don't think a <i>single</i> new player that has asked me for help has stayed . . . I'm not that great of a choice to help if they expect an immediate answer, but I guess a couple of my characters show up first on the people list . . .

I'm not doing something to scare away the new players, am I? This character has not done anything since she talked to me, and will probably starve now:

1195-4: a woman in her twenties says to you: "Hello, I am very confused about what to do. Got any advise?"

1196-2: You say to a woman in her twenties: "Hello, I am Danielle Morris. Could I get your name, please? I suggest that you first try farming some potatoes so you don't starve. Start a 1-day (800 gram) project to get potatoes, and I will give you one day's worth of food until you can finish. It is no where near a miserable place to live, ten times better than when your weakling was running things.

One person who doesnt know how to play the game ends up getting locked up for breaking the law and suddenly its the worst place to live.

So true. My character who spawned there did not join the Tribe, yet still managed to get himself food, a weapon, and a shield within a few days of spawning, and left peacefully.

One thing remains true for all towns, IC and OOC. You're not guaranteed to be safe if you follow the laws, but it certianly doesn't hurt your chances!

Oh and by the way, you'll find governments like that on pretty much any town with a valuable resource.
