Accidentally assisting criminals

Postby SekoETC » Fri Nov 12, 2004 3:04 pm

Your character comes across some people dragging others out of a vehicle. They politely ask people to give you a hand. They are not newspawns, most likely have some nice equipment visible, talk a lot, smile a lot. The people in the van are sleeping, may also have good equipment but some do not. Would you help?

---

Well, I have, twice. In both cases finding out later that it was a carjacking attempt. In the first case the thief was killed and so was my character. In the second case helpers had to bear some tongue lashing, the thieves are in jail. And both times I had no idea that there could be something shady about the case. (Now what kind of people sleep in an unlocked van if I may ask?) Though after the first incident I swore to myself I would not fall to it again, I would NE-VER help strangers in dragging. But everybody does it, people know that it's hard to find enough friends to have a dragging group that's online at the same time, so they just ask for assistance and mostly receive it.

What some might say of the poll options:
1: That you and your characters are kind but gullible
2: That your characters are gullible and you're playing well but might lose a character that way
3: Your characters are mean bastards and you're dodging the question
4: That you're admitting a breach in order to save your character's butt

Most of my characters would help, but I have never gotten in such a situation so I wouldn't know how easy it would be to be tricked into aiding criminals.

I'm suspicious, but if that character would help, then yeah, I'd drag. One of my characters is so innocent and gullible she believes almost anyone, except a few people she's terrified of.

I wouldn't. I don't think it's OOC reasons. It's just that my characters don't like to get involved in things like that, especially without full information. I don't have any who really act without thinking first (often), and most of them aren't unconditionally friendly. Being alive isn't reason enough to earn liking, trust, or anything else...neither is your gear. If you want my help, I have to have a reason to help.

I probably should have some clueless, open, hyperfriendly types for balance. But then, maybe not...there are enough already, obviously.

I agree with Industriallist. There should be a 5th option:

My character isn't gullible, so no.
I'm not dead; I'm dormant.

different situation where you help criminals unknowingly....

little backwater town, and a boat docks, nice smiling folks ask for food and healing foods and bit of other supplies in exchange for a tonn of nice things, tools, equipment and some nice resources.

woohoo!! you say, and take the trade, later to find out the boat is a pirate ship and the crew are wanted murderers in the whole region.

do you trade again, the next time they visit? hmmmmm delima.

Most of my characters would help. I do have a few that are very questionable and very suspicious so they probably wouldn't have.

As for the pirate situation some of my charries would say hell yeah to a trade no matter who it's from. Especially a good trade. Just as long as the pirates don't have that town as a main, or next target. :)

Depends on the character and the equipment...a few would attack the pirates...but if they don't have heavy arms and the inclination to fight for people they don't know, or for abstract order...hey, why simultaneuosly anger the pirates and loose the valuable, wonderful trade opportunity of being a fence? SOme of my characters would sooner fight for the trade than against it...

But taht isn't an inadvertant help problem...the first time, any of my characters would fall for that, most likely.

Unknowingly is unknowingly, of course you would accept nice trades though it sounds a little suspicious if anyone is ready to trade valuables for food, at least with reasonable prices... But in some places, there even might be a symbiosis, a nice but defenceless spot is growing healing foods and giving a safe haven to pirates when they leave the town in peace and give them some resources. At least in real life it would work. But this is Cantr, one third of the people in that imaginary village are sleepers, another third are just working machines and the rest have a small level of rp. They have no family relations exept for one or two love affairs. So probably someone would run and tell some other town that hey, guess what, our town is a pirate hideout! They told us they'd revenge if we tell anyone but our villagers are so boring anyway... and I want justice! Now if the other town would help (presuming that anyone even cares - if they are not by waterside they should be safe and if they are then they have already been robbed and murdered and have enough trouble on their own to start chasing shadows) of course some smartass would say that lets execute those villagers for supporting the pirates! They have no weapons so that's a piece of cake, and they loot the village (no we're not robbers, they deserved that!). Note: This event was totally imaginary.

If the people dragging people out of a car, I'd help if I knew them, otherwise, I'd think about trying to help them, so I could jump in the car and take it once it's empty.

A long time ago I had a character born in Lad. There was a man who said that he was going start a new government and I said I'd join. Haha. Needless say my character was killed. It was only there for about 3 days. I was mad at the time but in hindsight it was my fault. I'm a lot more cautious now. I'm not sure what I'd do in the van situation. It'd depend on which character was in the situtation.

It depends on the char, but generally, yes. None of my chars are headstrong by nature, but some are willing to take risks that may pay off later.

Psycho Pixie, the answer is 'yes'
