Just to add my two cents. I notice that Jos is getting into giving away specs of Cantr 2.0 ('Yes, you'd have to download the client after clearing the cache...') again, right after quite clearly noting that the development of it has come to a stand-still.
The naked truth is, that there has hardly been any development. We have made some plans, etc, but real hacking has hardly taken place.
So, really, even giving it a name is so much premature, that you'd technically need a new word for it.
My estimate is, that we won't have a beta version in a year from now on.
Cantr 2.0 !?!?!?!?!?!?

I think this was an older thread. I think the a newer one says he has restarted programming, mainly developing a grid system, but that he doesn't think it will be done in a while.
So the development of Cantr II 1.0 continues but eventually we're going to hit the snag that we can only go so far in the current system (I think, I'm not so sure what you programmers can or cannot do and the limits of the current system but from what I have gathered in the past it is limited hence the need of a 2.0 in the future).

I think character death is random but I would imagine it would be around 70 or maybe even as high as 80 or as low as 60 Cantr years. Has anyone even died of old age yet?

The limit is not so much what can be done programming-wise, but how much the server (processor, memory) can take.
New features sometimes demand more of those resources. More players always demand more of them.
A new version of Cantr would basically allow us a very structured approach beforehand, rather than the organic growth of Cantr II.
Anyway, Cantr 2.0 won't happen anytime soon. No need to get excited about it, no need to buy a new computer to meet its specs (partly because there aren't any yet), no need to threaten to leave Cantr because of Java, and no need for any other kind of measure that I have read about these days.
edit: Ah right, now I got it, too. That's an old thread.
