Similar characters from one player

Postby Taralyn » Fri Dec 13, 2013 3:15 am

What are the rules on having different characters with similar attributes or mannerisms, or very similar character descriptions? I've come across a number of characters which appear to have the same player, I don't want to say too much and give my own charries away. But where is the line rule-wise?

I don't think there is a rule is there? Apart from each character only using information they have and no outside influences. Some people have played similar characters in different circumstances in the past and they have evolved differently, I distinctly remember an old post describing such. I have 11 chars, 2 of them are based on the same base character but in different situations, both evolving differently and are starting to develop different characters, all of them have some of my attributes, some more than others. I personally think it's good RP to try and have different personalities in your characters but if you have a few, some are bound to be similar in some ways.
Unless the characters have the same name and do the same things, I can't see a problem to be honest.

Different characters from the same player can never have the same agenda, work towards the same goal etc. They never have any knowledge of eachother, except for what they might eventually learn in the game. A good rule of thumb is, when you have characters of your own getting into the vicinity of eachother, try to have one of them leave. It is very rarely a good thing to have two characters in the same town.

Characters should be individuals, and don't share names, descriptions, background or goals with another character, be it your own, or some friends character. Every such thing should be accomplished through events in game.

I saw three characters with the same description. Different names but exactly the same description. It is rather disconcerting.
I also saw a character whose player had copied my character's description (which is quite distinct) with very minor changes (except for the hair and eye colour, everything else was the same). That was so annoying.

Mine tend to have similar appearances, although there are some who look very different to the others, but generally I would say my characters are otherwise quite different.

This made me laugh. I guess imitation is the highest form of flattery... right?

... That is absolutely annoying. I'd be beyond irritated if I saw that happen to me.

As was I. :D Such blatant plagiarism... But then I also took it as compliment, like Black Canyon said. :)
