I would love for this to somehow be coded into the game but until then I would avoid it unless it was somehow explicitly known that this was how such things would work.

I'd support it. I miss dice in RPGs even more than the pencil and paper.

It could be cheat proofed with a virtual dice simulator. There are ones out there that send an email of the results to both parties (or more?) so the possibility of cheating should not exist. When I used to GM Axis and Allies games and a few other things, we used them exclusively.
