Most of my characters' relationships developed slowly. There were a few that fell in love at first sight, but they also tend to be the ones too damn shy to do anything about it themselves.
While I've never done the latch-onto-first-active-character-they-meet thing, I do admit that a bit of OOC leaks into who my characters fall for-- solely because playing with somebody whose RP grates on my nerves wouldn't be fun at all. My characters will never fall for or get into a relationship with a character like that. (Sorry?)

Spending IG years being loyal and feeding does wear one down, its a lonely vigil when one is telling the other their worries and fears and feelings, only to be responded to be cold silence. I lost one this way when my char finally let her go, almost lost another when he had decided (with some ooc knowledge that turned out bad! That will teach you kids!) to let her go. Had a fling...she woke up. I had to let her go anyways...well, she walked.
Just had another wake up after 5+ IG years... you never know. Ultimately Loyalty is something to be RP'd, some never have it to start, some have it for a finite time period, some forever. Play the game. Remember the Webb Wilder Credo:

grow big, wear glasses if you need 'em."

I don't participate much in Cantr's social scene, but I do talk with a select few people. I find my largest failing is that when I find out about what's going on in their lives, and they can't play as much for a while, my characters that are around theirs kind of just forget about them and go about doing their own thing, even if they should be worrying and fretting. Of course, if the players of those characters are better players than I, (most are), their characters, when they finally do wake up, get pretty depressed over being seemingly forgotten about.
I don't participate much in Cantr's social scene, but (when) I do...
Just struck me that this sounds like the beginning of a Dos Equis commercial.

@ Doug...Mojo found one of your chars kinda hot when he met her. *winks* He kept her note till the day he died. Not many people moved that man, but she did a good job.

My happiest char is married to the sleepiest partners/spouses among those mine are with. If he is awake twice a week that is a cause of celebration.
. She would never even dream about leaving him. He had loooooong periods of sleep (after being very active) which worried her sick but he said she kept him tied to this world, which she has never doubted.

I have to say out of all the relationships in game I played, the absolute best and my favorites were King Jimmy and Queen Nora of San D'Oria, and Ariochus and Susan of Zuzi. But they were both pairs that were together for many many years in game and they were relationships that grew, not something they just latched onto each other immediately. Though I do have some that do latch on quickly, I find these others where the relationship grows and isn't quite as apparent in the beginning, much more enjoyable to rp out and more worthwhile in the rp.

I can't say my characters quickly latch on to the first interesting character they meet in game, though I've had a couple of them that have had multiple relationships... determined more by their nature and their own evolution than by an "easy latching". Most of my characters have (or have had) long, developed over years relationships (if they're in one, that's it).
I must admit, though, that I tend to avoid very sleepy characters. I don't really mind sleep (my own characters do that when rl comes in the way) as long as they awake enough to have some rp to actually allow that relationship to develop. I find it difficult to rp some depth into any relationship when a character just wakes up once or twice a week for a few minutes. I know, this is ooc bias, but what can I do, I'm just human.
