Jos has made it as simple as this in a PM, to me.

It is a bit of a matter of good roleplay, I think. If you play well and interesting, you don't have your character just know everything. But players cannot be expected to remember exactly what their char experienced and what not. So it's a matter of how well you are as a player, not a matter of illegal or legal play. Only in extreme cases (e.g. sharing maps) should the PD intervene - not in basic cases.

Be reasonable.

Maybe your character would figure out how to make a hammer or know that a saber is made of steel right away, but would an average 20 year old know how to make an oven? In most cases no.
It's up to the players to know what their characters have learnt through-out their lives. Did your character ever witness a glass oven being used after spawning? Then it likely knows what it's used for.
Did your character see a glass oven before? Then it likely knows what's needed to put it together.
In any other case the character should likely either A ask how somethings done. B learn by watching. C Invent or experiment.

At the end of the day, the easiest thing to do, is to assume that any 'in-game' info a character has access to, they know. How to make all the tools, machines etc. And once they, or someone else has built a machine, they can learn what it needs simply from the information provided when they try to use it (could call this experimentation I suppose...)

I suppose Missy's right that it's about the level of roleplay each person uses. But, to be honest, it would take a very long time if characters didn't have a vague understanding of the uses of most machines. But, then again, RPing a character with little or no knowledge of tools and machinery could be quite interesting... (*hmmm...*)

Maybe the list of machines in Cantr could be such that each one is obvious what it is used to make (but not necesarilly what it uses to make that ( :?: you're cleverer than me if you made sense of that sentence...) or alternativly, give them names, so that they are all ambiguous, and each character would then have to ask about or build a machine to learn it's use
Whoever you vote for.

The government wins.

Yeah, it would be nice if we either all knew the uses or we could all at least make a good act of not knowing them.
