I played a lot of "pencil & paper" RPGs when I was younger.
In Sweden they have a lot of excellent games, lika Dragons & Demons (based on Dungeons & Dragons, but not so ridiculous with the levels), a game called Mutant (reminds much of Fallout), and one called Wasteland (also quite similar to Fallout, but more like if you apply the story of the movie series V to a planet of the apes society :))

I'm not so found of the free form RPG's on the web, because in contrast to the name I find them very strict and regulated.

Then again, I don't know if I am a good RP...but at least I try

To Revanael: Hah, if I write a long description then everyone thinks it's a lot.. But sure, I'm the queen of all roleplayers. At least online. I know a lot of people who've done so much more RL roleplaying than me. It's hard having a religious momma who keeps telling you RPGs are devil's invention... :( It would be nice to meet more roleplaying people in Cantr. Breaking the four day rule now but there's an example I just gotta post. It's with Pharap. He goes to help building a curing tub. Count all the things you could catch in rp...

Pharap Jahrot wrote: 895-8: You say: "Hey, looks like I found you.. This town is a real maze but Nora said you had gone here. Sure I wanna help you, I was just gathering some food first since like I said, I totally ran out of potatoes on the way. So, what`s this then, a bath tub? I could really use a bath... *Scratches himself.* I try to avoid touching the cows and all but it`s quite tough, them walking around, you really can`t help running into them if ya don`t watch out. *Continues scratching.* You can`t see the dots but oh-hoh boy if you keep sleeping side by side with animals you can feel the dots crawling onto your skin. You should think that the smell of sweat keeps them away but no... *He keeps on blabbing about germs forever.*"
896-1: Dane Turkan says: "thanks for the help]"

Ok, maybe he was talking so much mistah Turkan got all confused.

Same kind of things with Maline and Loifred, there I have just given up and only talk to him when necessary.

I've done pen and pencil rpg's for a while now. I still run campaigns from time to time. (mostly ad&d and white wolf, although I've played many non-mainstream games as well)

It's tough to know how I am as a roleplayer, because in pen and paper, I'm usually running the show as a GM. So I don't usually get into one single character very often.

Cantr is my first real online rpg experience. I tried a few MUDs but it never really went very far because I would get exasperated with the system and get killed by low level animals all the time. Cantr is different, for many reasons which all of us know or are coming to know. Roleplaying ability is something that is constantly getting better for all players. It's a skill that comes with practice, and Cantr I believe is the perfect training ground.

GM's are usually the best role players.
It takes a lot more effort and skill handling all the characters the others meet than holding on to a single character, who are all to often a stereotyphical hero.

I don't think there are several games called Fallout. Yes that does not count since it's a single player game, but I once made a pen and paper version of it... Though I recently destroyed most of the background materials... I have some pictures of unused NPC:s on my website, please take a look. The doc guy is inspired by a drug store clerk in New Reno.

Ok, I added the characted descriptions. If you viewed the page without them, damn you!

I've always wondered how pen and paper role playing games worked--could someone clear that up for me? I just don't see how one could role play using a paper and pencil. :?

The doc guy with sugar reminds me of the doctor in Broken Hills with his scorpion.

Oww he was ever so sad when I killed the scorpion... But really, it was a bad loser! Or I was, can't remember.

Pen and paper RPGs.. You write down things you should remember, like hitpoints. There the name comes from. You may have maps and mostly you must do hell of a lot of dice rolling to randomize things.

To explain pen & paper games:

Get a group of players together. One of them takes on the role of Jos: create the world, dictate the rules, what game mechanics are used, ect...

Everyone else makes their charries. Usually using dice to randomize stats, but not necessarily. Depends on what system you're using.

GM (Jos-person) goes over background for the charries and is responsible for explaining why these people get together and become companions. The GM plays out everything and everybody that the charries (PC's) meet. These "other people" are refered to as NPC's (non-player characters).

Nice thing about Cantr: no NPC's. Something that's rare in RPG's.

Paper & Pencil RPGs really have little do to with pencils and papers :)

They are very free and the story and everything is played out in the players mind. In most RPGs you have a character sheet where you can write down some basic things about their characters.
If you use dices as a randomizer you usually have different attributes and skills to help diverse your character from others.

With a good group it is much more fun that computer RPG's, since it becomes totally free...you can do anything as long as the GM allows it.

Problem is that people usually play paper & pencil RPG's when they are too young to get into character properly.

True enough, Pirog. I'm really dreading leaving my college gaming group behind when I graduate. I feel like too many adults leave it behind as a childish pursuit or never make the time to play it. It's a sad thing, growing up.

I like to think I'm a pretty experienced role player, but Cantr has been my first and only role playing game that I'm addicted to. I've tried a few other games, but they just weren't for me. I find Cantr a way to escape the harsh reality of the world and just enjoy myself being other people. I am sad to say I find myself very emotionally attached to my characters. I have cried over Cantr, laughed over Cantr, stayed up at night worrying about Cantr, and even dreamed about Cantr on various occaisions.

West said it best: "Like brains to a zombie, is like Cantr to us."

Sept 03 joined part,
and the this is my first ever rp whatsoever,
feel very connected to most of my current chars
and I've tried another game which I quit after riding the Cantr I want more rp wave, and from my own words, I doubt I'll ever try another.
