People know very well, that a kilo or so of food does not slow them down significantly. Checking the sand needed is a very precise way, I suppose, it may be very useful for engineers of Camtr, but think about it: _what_ do Cantrians need the information concerning distances need for? They want to plan their routes of journay in an optimal way. But that planning usually involves many social and personal issues as well. This precision is useless precision. You won't change your usual route of resource-gathering just becouse you find out that an alternative path to the same resources is one hour closer than you thought it were. More important is that you already _know_ the people of your usual resource-location. That's speaking about economy, of course, but in the case of politics, social or personal affairs, there are similarly important factors at work, other than the exact distances as well.
And talking about days or hours of is a bit more palpable, and down-to-earth. I like it.
Eh, but this is down to Cantr.
One of my char's is concerned of distance due to war. I need to know which way I can escape, mobilize, and strike our forces on our vehicle, bike and by foot. These are essential to how my char commands. He puts up a priority on upgrading roads, something that benefits everyone. So Distance is very important to me. If I knew it was closer to have gone via Knatr Desert and the other Deserts to Kii, rather than viisitng the MTs, I would've gone that way, but IC i didnt.
