Concerning living time capsules.

Postby Leo Luncid » Mon Nov 26, 2007 7:26 am

Okay, we've discussed of the time lapse between conversations and how it became to be an original, habitual way of Cantr life cemented in the minds of characters; but what's to say of those who slept over the many years, waking up to find that what felt like a few hours is really eons past?
In other words, how would one player play a character that has survived the sleeping sickness?

I'm supposing that like the previous thread, the answer has been nothing but an unwritten thought followed by many players, but I'm feeling that this should be confirmed.
That, and I have five sleeping potatoe couches that I have no idea what to do with.

I've been pondering of the possibilities, like:

1) once the charrie wakes, he would have to remember all the thoughts he's been missing out on his sleep all at once, having him endure major headaches endured through screaming (yeah, my initial conclusion, tested it myself :P ). This is related to how the player first see the Events page whenever he checks his characters after a long time.

2) the charrie, depending on how much her place has changed, may feel isolated from the others, especially if most or all of the people she associates aren't there anymore. Otherwise, if nothing significant has happened, she would be able to move on without a bother.

3) if the charrie has been talked/asked to many times throughout his sleep, he may wake up, respond/answer everything that has been said to him, and then move on; maybe sleep again, even.

4) she could just go crazy, knowing that she's been missing out so much of everything, having not to respond to anything because of her inability to be active. This could be roleplayed especially if the player would roleplay her charrie in very short moments in between great lengths of time.

Which of these four traits would you prefer?
Do take into account that the poll may not be comprehensive.

#2 sounds best. I don't see why it should be a big deal. Sometimes in life, you have to start over -- moving to a new city, a new job, getting married, etc. Sometimes people go into a coma and wake up later. They deal with it the best they can. They reconnect with the people they knew, and they try to catch up and move on with their lives.

I have seen #4 in action, and I hate hate hate it. Going crazy is a license to do anything, without regard for motivation or consistency. If someone had a specific mental illness in mind and RPed its symptoms every day, that would be fine. But this character just went psychokiller without warning, after waking up maybe once a year at most, for years. A pox on that player's head for getting some cheap thrills without putting any effort into it.

#2 would be accurate based on the game between April and August this year. But since the lag i admit i've been playing more to the tune of #4.

Someone waking up from sleep...

1627-1.32: You see Little John (a man in his fourties) die.

1627-1.32: Zara Gaspillage (a woman in her thirties) says: "Take it easy, LJ. Just breathe."

1627-1.31: Little John (a man in his fourties) says: "Khala? *he looks up in surprise, coughs once, and falls over*"

1627-1.31: Little John (a man in his fourties) says: "Everything seems so... confused. Someone should go to them in Akypor, to bring them some... food, and things. And tell them what to do. *he looks around, as if seeing the town for the first time* Everyone is so angry? What is going on? Zara? Wong?"

1627-1.31: Little John (a man in his fourties) says: "Everything went well in Akypor. The quarry should be completed by now. *he puts his hand to his forehead and wipes off some sweat, looking pale* The ebassy building too. There's 30 kilos of limestone on the jeep for Peterson's, and another 30... *he pauses, leaning heavily against a building*"

For me, either #2, or

#5: player realises that due to lack of recent involvement with the character, playing the character has lost much of its appeal, so just kills it off. Many people say Cantr is addicting... the lag tends to help you break the addiction and go and do something else instead.

I wouldn't take any of those options, they sound alien to me. If someone had talked to my character lately, I might answer it when I wake up, but if something had been said years back, I would act like I didn't hear it.

Some of my characters have spent a long time sleeping, well, at least one. He went inside when someone hurt his feelings and drew up a note explaining why he's so upset, but no one read it. The only time someone came in was to check where they have keys for, after that nothing. Then I ran out of food and I waited until there was only one day left, then I went on the road and died of starvation. No one followed me to ask why I was leaving.

I've done them all, except maybe the headaches and screaming bit. I've had a couple kill themselves over sleeping too much and feeling useless (one went crazy first).

In case you're getting the notion that you should, you don't have to. Same for anyone else viewing. I'm intending for everyone to focus on that green little question up there; I was simply proposing you my ideas I was curious of in reply.
