I recently noticed that the German advertising seems to lag even behind the general (English) advertising by several steps. You'll find hardly any german pages if you google for "cantr", for example.

I therefore took the freedom to register Cantr to a german gaming site (http://bgs.gdynamite.de/games.php?game=1229). Maybe someone could add the link to the "vote for Cantr" section on the player page?

PS Sorry MD for not having asked you first. :)

Someone was asking for a list of what we like about Cantr?
For me, it is:

1) Free. Properly Free. ie not one of those that's free but if you want to access the other 80% of the game or keep up with the leaders, you have to pay or get friends to join or whatever. Not even a million links to click on per day just to keep up with other players..

2) No need to log in every 'turn'. You can play when you want to play. I can fit the game round my life, not be forced to fit my life round the game. If you don't want to play for a week, your characters don't all die. I can go away for the weekend, I can get sent away for a few days by work, and I don't lose everything. That, to me, is more important than the slow pace, though obviously they're related.

3) You can create your own niche. You don't have to "win", you don't have to have more stuff than someone else to create an impression. All you need is personality for your character and imagination. A toothless beggar can be hailed as a great character every bit as much as a rich town leader.

4) There's almost no fantasy/magic/etc. For me, that's great, as I don't like fantasy/magic. However, it might put other people off, so not sure if that's one worth mentioning in advertising. Some people seem to crave fantasy to my continued surprise.

5) There's a really cool lag - the best one you'll see anywhere - it's worth joining just to experience the famous Cantr Lag. Hmm, maybe that one's in the wrong list. It's been better recently at times I play, but it's still awfully slow and that's going to continue to harm things as has been said before.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I found that saying "you can do whatever you want to do" in Cantr is misleading. If my character wants to spend his time playing skittles, eating mars bars, hang-gliding and stabbing people with pencils, he's going to find it impossible. What your character can do is limited by (1) your imagination, but also (2) the game. I can be anything I want to be, until such time as what I want to be/do is not possible in-game. I can be a madman, as I can RP being mad and no-one can say otherwise. But I can't wear velvet waitcoats, since they don't exist in Cantr, but since clothes _do_ exist, I can't RP I am wearing one, when people can see I'm not. My first character had goals that proved to be totally impossible - verging on a CRB in fact! - just because I was told I could be anything and then discovered I couldn't.
