Hopefully it tells you when there isn't water...
First we would need a lot more water pumping technology in Cantr. Hoses, and um..big water pumping things, something faster than a bucket anyway.

I think you should be able to build a sledge.
If you walk up hill, it slows you down.
If you walk down hill, you sit on the sledge, and your speed increases (and accelerates). So it is much faster when going, for example, from mountains to grassland.
On the downside, each day of sledging causes you a slightly random amount of pain as you slide precariously down the mountain side - 2% damage (+/- 1%) for the first day, doubling each day of travel. So if you start sledging down a particularly large mountain, and have bad luck, you arrive dead at the bottom

but what if theres snow?
there should also be a fun factor. AND ZOMG JUMPS!
i know! you should be able to attack water skis to boats! then someone can trail from behind, and OMG they should be able to attack a town with ranged weapons like bows as the boat passes by! it'd be great for pirates!
Now to include slight realism to this, the the fins put their army on skis to fight the soviets in ww2, and were highly effective at doing so. now skis on snow isnt THAT much of a streatch to skis on water...
