As Jos and Wichita said, you don't have to learn a foreign language.

Currently...

Players that don't want to deal with minority foreign languages can just ignore or kill those foreigns (they are a minority).

Players that don't want to deal with majority foreign languages can just spawn in majority language groups (if you are English, you can just play as English, your chars are supposed to appear in areas of English majority).

But if we eliminate the currently language-mixture situation...

Players that do want to deal with foreign languages (minority or majority) won't be able to. And this would mean players leaving Cantr (me between them).

PS: usually, I consume the same minuts in translators and dictionaries than in Cantr.

Not really.. they are only supposed to spawn in areas that have at least two English characters (as per current spawning works, I think). It just depends on your luck of the draw. Most likely you'll be in a majority area, but there are rare occurances of spawning in a barren place or a foreign place where travelers were.

Overall, I think it works for the better as it is; there are pluses and minuses to it, but I believe there's more good than bad.

Sure a drop down list of common emotes and gestures that everybody would read in his own language would be really helpful.

A. looks angry.
A. looks happy.
A. looks furious.

Or, at least, pointing at resources from inventory, objects or location:

A. points to himself.
A. points to wood.
A. says: 5000. <- actually, he would be making numbers with fingers.
A. points to you.
A. points to stone.
A. says: 10000.

Not that you can't actually do that now with spoken emotes, but you wouldn't need to use the English translation of them.

That's very nice for very basic comunication, but you can't roleplay together when you have no common means of communication (language).

Why not? I kind of like that suggestion, actually ...

It's an old one, of course. Some people like to play really involved behavior through emotes (*.....*), but most people don't, and just a small set of emotes like in some other programs would already do a lot, I think ...

http://www.cantr.net/mwiki/index.php/Int_emotes <-- Bookmark this page if you need it chronically. At least until the dropdown option is added. ;)
