One way to do projects while travelling, is to get a vehicle or a boat, or get someone to give you a ride.
Wooden carts are rather slow, but they're not too hard to make, just gather enough wood, get a hammer, and have your char hammer away until you have a small wooden cart.

The others already gave good advice, just look at the notes where-ever you go, read them, have your char ask questions if you're uncertain about something...
And I doubt you're someone to use that language, but just in case, don't use MSN-speek... lol... at least not in the game.
Also, when your char speaks of a timeframe of a week, you might get some puzzled reactions, that's because generally speaking, Cantrians don't divide a year into months or weeks.

Hee hee, no, the chances of me using msn speak (even on msn!) are about as high as me using Word Art in my next report...
