I simply start each char as though it was my first. That leaves each char ignorent of his surroundings and rules. So if your new and you find nothing but murder you accept it. Not at first but slowly grow into it. You may find it barbaric but for all you know that is how the entire world works.

I comes down to how you want to RP really. You cant just tell anyone who has been living for 20 years that killing is ok when their char background says otherwise. An open mind is needed if you want to have a little fun with your char. But not needed.
