Governments

Postby InsaneIrony » Wed Sep 29, 2004 3:24 pm

I know theres a lot of different government styles in various places of Cantr, and I was wondering how many of each there were.
I know some places have a dictator with absolute power, or a kind person who rose to lead the area, or someone who claims to be a king or emporer. Theres also groups that either aid the ruler in keeping law or govern the area themselves... I've noticed in some areas there aren't any real laws cause nobody lives there or nobody cares. I wonder if anyone has noticed an area run in a unique manner. Like a religion in charge or communist government.
Does anyone know if its mostly dictators or army groups in charge? Or clans or families?

Well Xiria forest is kinda communistic place. Or at least my charrie there hopes it would be. Problem is that if all things are common, no one knows who has them at the moment... Damn stone hammers...X-/

I'd have to say the vast majority of governments are basic no thieving no hunting laws, and a functionless council. Generally all being a council member means is that you can pick up items off of the ground when people die. Thats pretty much it in most times.

While these towns may look like a democracy, it is really just power by the people with the most weapons. The only true democracy I know if is Quillanoi. It has an advanced government, a usable currency, and a good legal system. Best town in game. And although democracy may SEEM like a common government, Quillanoi is unique.

But don't confuse democracy with a republic style gov, democracys have regular elections for the leaders, republic style govs normally keep the same people in power until they either step down or die. I think republic style govs include the majority of stable govs in Cantr at the moment, with "totalitarian" govs coming in a close second. I have yet to see any based on religon, or at least any that lasted any amount of time.

I perssonally don't see much difference between any of the governments anymore, seems to me that the current govs are ripoffs of either previous govs or of the closest stable gov to a particular town.

Quillanoi, to me, is a prime example as to why there aren't any purely democratic govs in RL, Quillanoi should be called "Red Tape Land", I had a char working for the Cult long ago and I couldn't stand dealing with the laws there even on a second hand basis, too much talk and not enough action or results.

Very true. But isnt it like that in real life, too? Nearby powerful entities influence local wannabes?

The main problem is the Quillanoi Guard, IMO. They dont enforce or follow the laws set out by the Council. Hell, most of the council doesnt even know whats going on half the time. If the council was full of people who knew what they were doing, Quillanoi could be better. I look forward to the next Council elections... not too far away now.

How'bout a place that is governed by one group because the rest of the people just don't care? That's what was happening in the French sector.

 Oh, yeah, I remember Larry, but I didn't see the Church of the Isane as a gov per say, more as a cult.

You're right about that, Nick, although it'd be alot more fun if you weren't.

If the Quillanoi Guard don't enforce the laws, why haven't they been "removed"? I don't mean killed, but replaced by people who are loyal, no gov can stand firm if the ones upholding its values aren't doing what they should be doing, surely the problem has been noticed IC...

I don't know what that would be called, unless the people interested in order decided upon a set plan...but it does sound familiar. Lots of govs in Cantr have started out just like that...

There is no problem. I can assure you. This is an interesting conversation, but please don't believe to much of it unless you have a character in that town, and feel the same way as Nick.

The Quillanoi law states that animals are to be hunted for economical purposes only. Now, when the animals are violent, they have to be killed. Nick's character doesn't like that it doesn't say that in the laws. That it's not written out, that when an animal attacks, you're allowed to kill it. As long as animals have been around, the Quillanoi Guard has killed the violent ones. Now Nick's char, who is fairly young, has a problem with that. Since it's not written down, he would prefer to let the animals attack everyone. :D That's what he's talking about. The Guards are as loyal to there community as they can possibly be. And they don't even keep the resources from hunts! It goes to the government inorder to back the Qui.

Firstly, remember to differentiate between my character, and me. I am not that much of a prick

Amon is no PETA member. He just thinks that laws should be created by pen not by practice. What would stop the Guard from starting to kill prisoners who got lost in the system(like they already havent...)? Or any other law? He wants to make sure that the laws are followed. If noone follows or enforces the laws, we have chaos.

He doesnt doubt that. But they definately should be doing their job by following and enforcing the laws. Attacking the animals is against the laws, no ifs ands or buts. Just look it up. As anal as it may be, it IS against the law.

Anyone ever watch South Park? "THEYRE COMING RIGHT FOR US" or "WERE THINNING OUT THEIR NUMBERS".
Just another excuse that doesnt make sense... you cant withdraw animal resources from the bank so it wouldnt really back the Quii in any way, as nobody buys/sells animal parts.

Try Drojf. The laws are mostly simple, but while there are no regular elections there is provision for a vote to demand new elections, which according to law could occur at any time. With an elected 3-part executive/legeslative branch and direct democratic legislation options, I don't see how you can say it isn't a real democratic government.

They just don't make up stupid laws like weapons licensing to give themselves extra, pointless work. But if someone wanted it, and the public agreed, it would happen.

Blaman Forest is pretty much ruled by the religious, although their religion means that they leave people very free to decide for themselves.

But it is they who hold the power, make sure there is food in storage, make trade deals with their neighbours etc.
