Resource dragging simplification.

Postby Cogliostro » Thu Mar 22, 2012 5:40 am

Currently, when dragging a pile of resources that is too massive for your character, one must pick up 15kg at a time and carry it over manually until the pile becomes small enough to drag. This is really an unnecessary annoyance for players.

Can we make it so that a drag attempt on a big pile transfers an amount that the character was able to drag, leaving the rest behind. So you can repeat your drag a few times and this way easily transfer the entire pile.

We spoke about this many time if I not wrong. This is isn't in game because implementation issues.

I think we have accepted somewhere that dragging should be a project. But I can be mistaken.

I like this option. It will save me clicks.

Suppose there are bad coding issues with making this "partial drag" work rightly, how about just making stacks of any size draggable for all characters?

Because if the partial thing was done, then really it's the same, only with less pointless clicking for players.

For example - because this make damages dones by pirates etc. much easier.

You see some limestone being dragged to Room (very weak person (3523Town)).

Snickie: We'd just make everything, including objects, freely draggable.

Join in for a thought experiment. Let's say there is a pirate attack and a pile of 100,000g iron they're trying to nick. Currently, it's required that the pirates grab it 15kg at a time, click like mad to get onto their ship, drop it, then grab another 15kg and repeat like this until they have it all aboard.

And this is supposed to be our in-built protection against pirate attacks? Namely that they just have to click really fast, and maybe, townies hope, they won't be able to do it? When you see it in this way it's obvious the "protection" is just another one of those silly advantages that fast-connection clickfesters still enjoy in Cantr. Real pirates in Cantr as well as their attacks are vanishingly rare. On the other hand, we have the day in and day out annoyance all players have to suffer with bigger stacks of stuff, when they can't drag them properly. Why is this?

Pirates was only example. I'm not like totaly automatic things and remove all clicks. You first idea was much better and was accepted I think - I planing implementation of it, but I can't say now when it will be.

I think using extra clicks to discourage behavior we don't like is a REALLY bad idea. If something needs a deterrent, it should have an in-game deterrent - there is no excuse for having a cumbersome UI that ALSO makes "approved" behavior tedious. It also just gives another advantage to people with better internet connections. If it is possible to do in almost the same amount of time with no in-game differences, then we should just go ahead and automate it.
