Desire-Based Spawning (DBS)
How about a checkbox you can click when spawning:
"spawn on an island you don't have any characters on currently? (warning - characters on roads are not counted as being on an island)."
I think the ability to separate characters more should be encouraged in this manner.

Yes, please! Having two characters "bump" is so awkward.

Re: Spawn on a new island?
I'm sorry, I know this is a little off topic, but since we are talking about checkboxes that could be clicked before spawning, it's somewhat related. Could the players also be given the choice of spawning in a location that currently has more than or less than X amount of people in it? And going one step further, coastal town versus non-coastal town? Maybe this could be something all those credits earned for voting on the voting sites could be used for.

Well, there's currently no way to earn more credits, so that system is dead.
I hesitate to allow more specific selection. It could lead to wide-spread town death if the majority of players pick the same parameters.

Re: Spawn on a new island?
Would that be such a bad thing if it also leads to more active towns elsewhere? If the town is too quiet or noisy for a newspawn they're most likely going to leave anyway or else sleep themselves to death.

I don't think it's fair to characters that are praying for newspawns to be up against even more than randomness.

Re: Spawn on a new island?
I'd almost rather encourage clumpiness. The english zone is much too big for the current player base and most places just suck.
I would love to be able to pick a region of a few islands where my char would spawn inside, or islands that I do NOT want to spawn on.

Re: Spawn on a new island?
I do like this idea. It's not fun being spawned on the same islands over and over and over.
I sort of like the thought of choosing a range of how many characters are in the areas to spawn, though I don't care for the ideas about choosing inland/coastal or getting terribly specific. Perhaps such choices for number of characters could be wide ranges like 1-20 and 20+ or 1-15 and 15+. The wide range wouldn't really change how it already is a lot, it would just get people into smaller or larger communities. I suppose it could be stated on the page as: Community size? A) Smaller or B) Larger (or some better phrasing).
Another thought about spawning in general:
Would it be possible to change something so that the chances of gaining a newspawn are increased for populated locations that have received them less recently? Then once they receive one or two or something, the chances for a newspawn would be decreased for a little while and other populated locations would have more chance? That might be too difficult though, considering all the factors that would have to go into it and how terrible I am at explaining what I mean by such things.

Re: Spawn on a new island?
I've proposed several methods for towns to increase their spawn chances, but they were all denounced as "too weird." I still love my "spawn sack" idea. It doesn't have to be an egg (what my detractors called it), they could be anything less weird. Crystals?

A catholic church?
Having been raised Catholic, I believe I'm allowed to say that, right?

Re: Spawn on a new island?
I don't think my idea would require something like spawn egg-crystal-sacks so much as just changing some numbers and putting in some code. lol
It was more along the lines of:
Town A & Town B each have a 50% chance to get a newspawn. Town B is lucky and gets a newspawn. Since Town B has gotten a newspawn more recently than Town A, their chance drops to 25% the next time around while Town A's chance raises to 75%.
Of course, there are way more populated places in Cantr, and I don't know how complex the code would have to get (or if there's already something similar to it).
Anyway... I still like the main suggestion here and don't want to bog down discussion of it with too many side thoughts.

Re: Spawn on a new island?
I have nothing against the original suggestion.
Maybe we should try making the spawn algorythm more sensitive to distance first though. If I remember what I've seen of the code correctly, it would probably be very easy.
