There are about 15 Jan Kowalski's that play Cantr, and I was wondering, is this name the equivalent of Jane Doe, a name that you use when you don't know their real name? (Police officer: "We found a Jan Kowalski dead in the woods.")

I won't insult you by trying to translate this using an online translator.

Yup, if you don't want to give the real name you give Jan Kowalski. It's not a common name in Poland these days (cause every parent knows that he'd hurt his child with giving that name  ), I haven't met anyone named like that in real life.

that's right, it's the polish equivalent of John Smith. John == Jan, smith == kowal and Smith == Kowalski
