Test of literacy into Cantr
Players would be required to take a test and show that they can spell and use correct capitalization. While on it they would agree to sustaining the same level of quality in all their writing within the game. It's ok to have characters that talk weirdly, and it's ok to express mumbling with writing all lowercase, but if children were implemented right now, I'd be sure to spank the bad spelling outta my kid.
This thing is not unheard of. Those of you who play KoL know that for unlocking chat channels other than the newbie channel, you need to pass a test of literacy. The Ghost of English literature says: "Go, revenge my death!"
And if you want to say Cantr is an educational game, why not reward improving in such simple thing as spelling with rights to spawn into better environment?

This is an interesting idea! Often times I feel that it is lack of effort on the players part more than anything.
I like this idea as long as it does not discriminate against players who are not using their primary language. I'm sure many people are playing in the English language area to help brush up on their language skills just as I am making the pathetic attempt to do in the Spanish language area.

The dreaded lowercase 'i' is what I hate above all else. *shudder*
And I bet no matter what country a player lives in, capitalizing the beginning of a sentence and putting a period on the end is still the norm.
I hate it when I see someone talking like that. You can't RP with these people, all you can do is ignore them as much as possible and RP around them. It's annoying, it's disruptive, and there've been times I literally wished it was possible to report them to the PD.
I'm not talking about the occasional typo or a person who doesn't know the language all that well - that's pretty recognizeable in fact and easy to look past it. What gets under my skin are lines like: "ok im done can i have a sheild now!11!!!"
And then it gets me wondering if it's okay for my char to despise that person because their player is too lazy to type properly, or would that be considered an OOC thing?

I don't know, but I have DEFINITELY seen that those who cannot be bothered to use capitalization and punctuation and spelling correctly have a much harder time of it (Pie, are you listening?)
In fact, I know of at least 1 character who is going to die because nobody can stand him, and it's mainly because his player doesn't want to push his fingers all the way to the comma and period keys.

I gave one a chance, since it seemed the IC thing to do...he fell asleep and I think eventually starved. I think it was an incarnation of Pie, actually.
I'm not clear on how this could be made to work, though. You couldn't award any kind of benefits to characters for this, could you? SOunds like a violation of basic cantr principles. You could make it a prerequisite for starting an account, but I bet it would drive people off.
Maybe if you had to take it to start a third character?

ITS! ITS!
Ahem, sorry, I mean no offense. The ACT has scarred me for life. Damn generic it's/its question.
Anyway, I have long been rooting for this, but I doubt it'd go over well. All the same, the sooner you get "lol" and "k, u?" out of Cantr, the happier I'll be.
