Let's automate everything...

Postby curious » Tue Apr 17, 2012 10:57 am

Okay... on reconsideration of the benefits of automation, I have decided that bothering to actually 'play' Cantr is nothing more than a burden of mouse-clicks and having to think about how and why to interact with other chars.

With this in mind, and the fact that it has been pointed out that Cantr is actually a 'society simulator' first and a role-play-game second, I suggest that we:
1. have a check box that we can select to pick a theme for our chars, that is then automatically played for us, over a given game period... perhaps a Cantr year. For instance... My char X will adopt an aggressive theme, pick fights and be generally obstructive to other initiatives.... or... My char X will become a pirate for couple of years, becasue this has a good chance of increasing their wealth, and they can't be bothered to think of other ways of doing this, talking to traders or following the links in order to achieve this.
2. remove the 'talk to all' box, as whilst it can be interesting to see how people engage with each other, this is a needless activity for the purposes of 'simming' and really... all that typing is problematic.
3. give each newspawn the choice of a vehicle of preference, because travel is such a pain in the arse, and probably adds nothing to the experience of a char, which in itself, serves no purpose to 'simming' anyway. They should also have the choice of a weapon too, just in case someone chooses the 'aggressive theme' (see above.
4. add a link to the home page, that simply takes me to an output page for the chars I might have... preferably in an executive summary, because reading stuff is problematic. This way, I can just see how I'm doing, and cross my fingers if things are going badly for me, and well... just hope and pray they improve, no?

and so on... ad infinitum....

Hey... don't laugh... it'll be just like reading a book... Oh wait........

You just stole my idea at the same moment as me.

*scratches the back of her head* I'm a bit confused, wich is not difficult xD

I voted against. I guess I didn't see the point of it. Well, there are different ways of "playing cantr" and none is better than other, you just chose the one that fits you and tend to interact with the ones that had a similar vision and I guess that's one of the enchanting things of this, but I find that "reading stuff" part essential.
I might be a reactionary about this, and probably I'm being slanted by the way I play, or by what I enjoy, but I think that too much automation just makes people lazy.

Edit:
Okay... was it just irony?

Yeah... I noticed that too... great minds and all that.

NancyLee... this is nothing more than a facetious suggestion on my part... a parody. Please don't take it seriously. It will be deleted and I will get into more trouble for it, no doubt.

*she peeps out from the blanket* Yeah, yeah... parody is for the clever ones and I shouldn't mess in grown ups discussions

Hope you won't get in trouble. Well, it's funny once you get it.

I was going to say....
With Cantr's unspoken "no automation" policy and the title of this thread (Let's Automate Everything...), I figured it had to be a joke.

Every game requires some player interaction with it. Automating that interaction removes the point of games alltogether. Why having a game it it plays by itself?

(one game I know plays by itself: Progress Quest, but it is rather an amusment than a game)

Great idea.
It would make game faster, because I think also having such things as location, meeting other characters etc. can be deleted.
You'll have list of your characters with short (because reading more than few words is troublesome and wastes time) information "working for iron", "running a company", "pirating" etc. Also implementing new things like animal domestication would be easier, because I'd have to just add "domesticate animals" option and you'll see your character performs "milk cow" action.

Thanks for the idea. :)

Afraid the sarcasm was lost on some, curious. I'm torn on how to vote, though. I fully agree with the facetious nature of this suggestion, but am against complete automation.

Obviously this was meant to be a jab at Cog, but I'd answered yes before really reading the post. In seriousness, I am a big advocate of automating any tedious aspect of the game as that leaves more time for actual RP.

I personally draw the line at automating decisions or automating player-generated content. Once a player decides to act on a decision or take an action though, they should be able to do so with as few roadblocks/mindless clicking/frustration at mechanics as possible.

I may be against Cog's ideas, because they do go into the realm of the game taking content generation out of the hands of players, but I am still an fan of greater automation (particularly of interface mechanics).

Get implemented..? O.o
I'm surprised it lasted this long.

I seem to be labelled now as some anti-automation evangelist. This is not true.
