More ways to die! (or be injured)

Postby returner » Mon May 03, 2010 5:19 am

So the advent of suicide is coming along, which is good, but I think there should be more ways to die. The life of a Cantrian is currently pretty easy. Provided there are no threats of violence and food is abundant (which it almost always is), there is no risk of death.

I'm trying to brainstorm a few new ways to die.. legitimate, realistic ways.

Obviously new diseases is one, but this is a tricky one as it can stuff up new communities (despite the realism..).

Excessive Tiredness
Excessive tiredness could make someone require water, or be very dehydrated. The tiredness wouldn't go away until water was drunk. You'd get warnings leading up to it. Also, excessive alcohol consumption (like, kilos of it) could also make you dehydrated / require water. And unless you got water within, say, a week.. then you would start losing health (maybe 15% a day?).
Of course, this may have to wait until water is more abundant and easier to obtain.
This would assist the combat system too! If you attack too many people (if you're a suicidal newspawn or pirate) then you run the risk of dying yourself.

Food poisoning
Perhaps if food is left on the ground where a dead body is (or dung? I think dead body is better though), then the food can become a new type of food.. 'Rotten'. So if there is a pile of 20,000 potatoes next to 5 dead bodies, every so often it becomes 18,000 potatoes and 2,000 'rotten potatoes'. Later, it could be 12,000 potatoes and 8,000 rotten potatoes.
You can still eat the rotten potatoes but there is a high risk of poisoning.
The poisoning can be cured by resting, but it will cause a 7% loss to health every day, for 10 days. Or, if you are resting, 3% loss to health for 10 days. That means, if you're frail and injured and weak, you will die of this. But if you are a strong, healthy Cantrian, you will live through it but be very sick. Perhaps you can also feel 'faint' during this sickness.

Alcohol poisoning
Perhaps, with the tiredness suggestion above, excessive alcohol consumption could cause illness.

Rabies?/animal disease/animal infection
Perhaps after being attacked and badly injured by some types of animals, you get diseased, making it hard to work and you 'froth' at the mouth.
Or, you are unable to eat for several days, and get 2% injury to health per day.

My favourite: (read this one if no other)

Broken Arms/Legs from manual labour
If you are weak (or below average strength) and you work on projects with an output weight of over 20,000 kilograms, you run the risk of injuring yourself. If you're on a drill, for example, and you work on drilling up 25,000 grams of hematite, then you may 'injure' yourself on the drill and lose a certain amount of health.
This would be even better if you were 1) weak, 2) awkward. So if you're unskilled and weak, your chance of injury is higher.

This increases the need for job specialisation, meaning strong experts can do the hard work and weak unskilled can do administration of jobs / leadership roles.

Seriousy, I'd rather see effort put in enhancing gameplay and stuff that makes your characters live, than killing even more characters off.

I sort of think they would make things more interesting but most if all things shouldn't kill if you're actively treating it. In real life rabies is or was for a long time incurable, but a Cantrian version should not be.

Overall I think it would make life more interesting if animals got shield-bypassing hits, even if it didn't have a chance of infecting you. Currently if you get a chitin shield on a mammoth and rhino region and are a good hunter, it will protect you no matter what. Where's the excitement in that? I remember from old Mulof North that you were sure more likely to log in as often as you were able when you knew that you could be dead within a day due the lions. If animals posed a considerable threat, there could also be things like fires and loud musical instruments scaring them away. Imagine this, you play symbals and get a reduced chance of animal attacks on yourself for a day, but if too many people play them, the animals may panic and attack at random.

I like the thought of spoiled food. It would be a good way of humiliating prisoners, too, by making them eat something regular people would discard.

You don't think someone injuring themselves on a drill enhances gameplay? Or the new need for job/role specialisation at an advanced level? (this wouldn't affect people who harvest without advanced technology, only those towns who are already very advanced, and can bring them to the next level).

Absolutely.. I think more dangers add a new dynamic to Cantr. Some of these do NOT make anything HARDER in Cantr for the majority of characters.. just for the minority.

Gameplay and roleplay are not synonyms, so no.

Touche, I agree with you there...

What if the effects were dampened down? So this suggestion is less of one about dying, but rather one of injury.. It would create a new level or dynamic to Cantr I think.

Personally, I'd find it OOCly annoying if all of a sudden my character is injured by the drill and then an animal gives him rabies, and his only food source was rotten..
(I'm sure my character would too)

I would too. And I and so many other people I know tend to quit annoying games.

Hear, hear! Down with all suggestions that just make things more annoying. That should eliminate a pretty big chunk of that section.

I still don't think it's annoying....... You can't enter some buildings because they're locked. That's annoying. You can't dig up 4400 grams of limestone a day without a drill, that's annoying. You can't walk between towns straight away, that's annoying.

But that's Cantr, and you don't quit because of it..

Someone who is awkward at drilling and weak, would 1) not be able to handle the drill properly, and 2) not be strong enough to handle the force of it. Thus, they are likely to injure themselves on it.. Which creates a need for 'expert miners'. Towns could literally 'look' for these expert miners/drillers in other towns, or advertise for them. They would pay handsomely, and ACTUALLY CREATE A NEED FOR JOBS.

It's not annoying.. like I said, it creates jobs! Real jobs. Right now, anyone can do anything, and will be payed the same.

The rotten food also might create farming jobs. Perhaps someone who is awkward at farming will harvest rotten or poor-quality food at a rate of 10%.. so it's not going to end towns, but it will certainly be annoying, and they'll need PROFESSIONAL farmers.

Please excuse the caps, it sounds like I'm trying to be condescending, but I'm just emphasising the words and cbf italic'ing them.

You are mixing up different suggestions in this thread. Very confusing. And annoying. I quit! :D
