Fishing Boats

Wouldn't it be nice if while you where out at sea you could use a fishing rod or even a FISHING NET! and so even while lost at sea,exploring or under pirate siege you could live off the land...errr water. I suggest implying the ability to gather fish while on water. Can anyone think why not?
