I suggest string made out of steal along with strings made of hemp, cotton or silk.
Rationale: When community is developed to certain level but have no access to hemp, (well maybe) cotton or (hmm...) silk to make rope for their limestone quarry while in nearby location using drilling machines with diamond blades, it is illogical for me.
Use in game: In general it is OK just to make steal string and use of it along all other strings.
But it may be limited use in some cases (like fishing nets) or some exclusive use especially where heavy loads are involved (like in quarries) or high strain level (like crossbow).

In ease way it will just another kind of ropes (believe or not in some continents god forgot some plants).
In hard way use of all kind ropes can be diversified just some thoughts:
- silk rope or cotton rope not suitable for loads, like in quarries.
- steal string not suitable for nets or fishing at all.
- for crossbow only steal string can be used.
- for all bows steal cannot be used.

It is spelled "steel", and silk makes a great high strength rope. Notice how drills must use diamonds? We like for things outside the steel cycle to be used to advance the steel cycle, and this is one of the only things in which any significant amount of rope is actually required. I am rejecting this suggestion (though not because of realism).
