weather/climate/disasters, Duplicate

Postby viktor » Wed Sep 27, 2006 11:36 pm

this covers a bit of a few things and is hard to place in just one category as it involves interaction of a number of things (hows that for technical talk) coverns uses for resources in certain events, extra encouragement for machines, gives clothing more uses, and is all in regards to weather/climate/minor disasters

coastal flooding (mountains, forests, hills, deserts exempt) which would fluctuate resource slots ,now of course if a coastal city has 10 slots and they are all filled then a flood happens reducing it to 7 the question is, what happens about those 3 flooded slots? allow them to keep collecting and just not let them back on it till the flood is over or, boot the 3 most recently started of those active projects and make them wait until the flood is over to get back on em? or maybe toss sand on the ground and it turns to mud and you could fight the flood via this methid or leaving mass amounts of sand on the ground in preparation for a flood in flood prone areas? alternativly some places could be constant flooders which have a slow but continual flood rate which can be fought again using the sand and forcing mud buildup (what the heck are we gonna do with all this damn mud  )?

forest fires would have basically the same effect, cutting back on the slots available until either it rains or people throw enough water on the ground to fight the fire and reclaim those slots?

now i do think it might be possible to have a blight/plague of some vegetable eating insect which would reduce the average collection rate of nourishing foods in location dependant on population of those insects but the risk is it having a catastrophic effect if they breed in insane numbers and drop potatoe collection rate from 1600 to 100 per day (now if harvesters were made immune to this it would give people 2 options, to mass exterminate the nuisance or force them to build harvesters).

now for mountains, how about gradual ice buildup? say it takes 1,000 grams of ice to cover a resource slot and you can gather it with a pickaxe only, at a rate of 200 grams per day, and say it builds up at a rate of somewhre between 20 and 50 grams a day? you could either melt it down in a pot over any cooking aparatus, or you could drop it on the ground to melt in any non mountain town and turns into half it's weight in water? of course the ice would stop accumulating once the resource slots are all covered on that mountain top, in fact if an entire mountain top was covered if you wanted you could disperse that ice accumulation to surrounding areas such that we could have a virtual ice age if soemone neglected some mountains for too long, (you cannot melt ice on the ground in a location beside a completely ice filled mountain) and as location after location are neglected and allowed to fill up the ice would spread furhter and further, chances are this would never be allowed to happen because people would be hacking away long before it becomes a problem but it's an idea  and think about this, if you are surrounded by ice you should get cold which would actually make a practical use for clothing a warmth value for each article(doubtful though i dont know much about programming i am sure this will take a number of hours to code) and if you are not dressed warm enough then, well you get negative effects to your status, maybe hourly damage and the inability to recover fatigue while fully exposed to the cold. and roads leading to a fully iced over location are treated as paths regardless of thier true level of upgrade?

and how about sandstorms in deserts, during a sandstorm you are unable to collect resources for the duration of the storm because you cannot see what the heck you are doing lasting anywhere from a couple hours to 5 days at a time and have a halting effect on travel out of the storming location (only break is if it's coastan and you have acess to a boat), this also should give damage to people standing out in the sandstorm naked(a robe should be enough to save you, drapes down all the way and has a hood, or you could have an article for the legs, one for the torso and one for the head to fully protect you from the damage if you cannot go inside)
well that's enough of me going on about weather suggestions
