Parasols/umbrellas

It would be nice to have something to protect from the rain (and sun). I'm not sure how waterproof Cantrian materials are but for example leather might be pretty waterproof, and some types of cloth are waterproof unless someone pokes at it because it breaks the surface tension. Sailcloth would also be an option, although it's not light. For parasols, silk cloth and cotton come to mind. And maybe a reed parasol for the savages.

I like this idea very much, especially in light of the weather.

Poll please. I'm voting yes. I was about to propose the same idea.

I think sailcloth is great for umbrellas and silk for parasols. And I'm voting yes in the invisible poll. :D

I added a poll for resources. Only vote for ones you actually want. That doesn't have to be everything.

Paper parasol

Resources:
50 grams iron or 70 grams wood
30 notes
;D
jk

I have no worthwhile contribution to make to this topic besides that bad joke up there.

I think the three with the most votes could get implemented and if the others get more votes, they can be added later.

So to think about resource costs, parasols can probably use wood for the support structure but I think umbrellas should use steel. I'm suggesting 100 grams for the frame and 150 grams for the fabric.

That sounds really good Seko.

Or, if you really want lightweight umbrellas, aluminium for the frame.

Yeah, I was considering aluminum too but considering how heavy sailcloth is, it would sort of defeat the purpose. Maybe if there is a rubber umbrella, that could use aluminum.

This would be a separate suggestion, but in terms of waterproofing umbrellas and/or making a large number of other things... plastic is made from oil... ethylene, for example, is the main ingredient in vinyl (umbrellas) and is a petroleum product.

Polyethylenes and polypropylenes (petroleum products) are used in making hard plastics for containers, covers, etc. to protect from the elements, and, when stretched or thinned, to make things like plastic garbage bags (which are supposed to be relatively waterproof but do leak, as anyone who's dealt with them knows).

One new machine would get you some chemical like this from oil. Industrially they're known as "crackers" as they crack down petroleum into constituent or hybrid elements.

But if you don't want to go the technologically interesting route (many players seem allergic to such notions)... oilcloth would seem like an obvious choice. Oilcloth is a very tightly woven fabric coated with boiled linseed oil - other products in game could be substituted - similar to sailcloth but lighter and more flexible. Historically oil cloth was one of the few widely available flexible, waterproof materials - cheaper, easier to make, and more durable than leather actually as a waterproof substance. Leather, after all, suffers greatly from being repeatedly wetted and requires retreating.

Waxed cotton is another great natural alternative that could be made using existing in-game materials, and replaced oilcloth as the waterproof cloth standard around 1850.

Waxed canvas is still used sometimes today, so I like the idea of wax and cotton in that sense.
When you explained using vinyl for umbrellas, though, is that just for the transparent ones? I would have expected the standard black umbrella to be simply polyester. I don't know how polyester is made, though, and I can't really see that material fitting in in the world of Cantr.

Polyester is also a polymer thermoplastic most commonly made by refining petrochemicals. In fact, polyester is short for polyethylene (see previous post on ethylenes) terepthalate, or PET. Polyester does have superior wind/water resistance than natural fibers like cotton, wool, hemp, etc.

Vinyl umbrellas come in all shapes, colors and sizes. But yes, most standard black cloth umbrellas are made from polyester.

The winter stuff got accepted so quickly so we were able to put our poor chars out of winter misery but they have to still be subjected to downpours? :D
