Animal spawning (specifically breeding)

Postby Millhouse » Fri Sep 11, 2015 3:11 pm

I have a few characters that closely watch domesticated animal pairs for newly spawned livestock. It seems like it has been about a month since any of them have seen any new animal spawn. I know the chances are low in some cases, but it seems like it's taking longer than usual for all of my characters to see new livestock. Has anyone else noticed this?

Sheep still reproduce like crazy so it must be just bad luck?

Have all the resource slots at the location been blocked?

I noticed the same with ostriches. Without blocked slots, they don't breed and haven't for a month now.

No, plenty of resource slots available in those locations and highly likely so during the last month.

Sheep normally do breed like crazy, which is why one character finds it odd to be staring at the same two sheep for weeks.

Try letting them go hungry for a few days and then feeding them again. Works with bushpigs.

Really? So is this a known problem, then? It's just odd to see it happening in multiple towns, which leads me to believe it's more widespread.

It's possible it's just bad luck, of course.

I know this isn't completely the same, but.. I've been wondering if there is a limit to the number of animals in locations? One of my characters decided to take up an empty town. There were three animals, then in a matter of days, there were seven. (All of the same type, I mean.)

However, it's been... I want to say at -least- a month, and no more have been born.

Yeah, I'm willing to write it off as bad luck for the time being if others are saying they're seeing breeding happening. But at least a few others have said they're seeing the same trend.

Yes. Limit: 99 for one type of animal.

Oh... well 7 is a far cry from 99. Odd.

Is the breeding totally random then, and it's just been a long time since the correct number was drawn or whatever?

The wiki used to list the reproduction rate on a lot of animals. That info seems to have been removed when Sanchez did the big update to the wiki pages for all the animals. Migration rate and lifespan seems to have been removed too.

This page kind of explains rates but it's a bit useless without knowing an animal's reproduction rate.

I do like the updates that were made to the animal pages, but that info was useful and it would be nice to have it back.

I don't think that anything published regarding reproduction rate (including what is still there, like the page you linked) is still relevant to the current animal system. Those were all values from before the animal reform and haven't been true or relevant for many RL years.

Oh. Well then I'm glad they were removed. I thought the info was current. Do you know if each animal still has a different likelihood to spawn? It seems that way. Sheep usually spawn rapidly while it seems like larger animals like cows take their time.
